I'd especially like to know of any podfics for fics rec'd here so I can add those to the rec posts!
Also, I have lost some fics I'd love to find again. I'd really appreciate your help finding these:
Specific short fic in Supernatural fandom (probably Sam/Gabriel) details behind the link.
Does anyone have an archived copy of "The Fire before Winter" by Kryptaria? I pulled up my old post about it to rec it on fancake and the AO3 version is gone and a google search failed to turn up any others.

Fandom: Hunger Games
Length: Epic (311,626 words)
Before Katniss and Peeta, seventy-three children won the Hunger Games. Some were brutal. Some were clever. Some were lucky. A few were almost decent. These are their stories. This is the Victors Project.
Absolutely fantastic! Every chapter is a new one shot of a games and each one is beautiful in the same terrible way as canon. This is a fic you don't need to read in one go - it can be read chapter by chapter over time - but it can also be really enjoyable as a whole, driven by the diversity of narrator voices (some chapters are POV of the victor they focus on, some of viewers, some of Capitol fans or Gamemakers, even some of mentors), the overarching themes of Hunger Games history and the lives pre- and post-war of some canon favorites and the continued human drama/trauma of the canon verse expanded. The characters and plots are amazingly well written from the first to the last and at 77 chapters and more than 300,000 words, this is a complete and classic epic every Hunger Games fan should read.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Genre: AU, Snape-adopts-Harry, Snape has a family, Good!Tom Riddle (sort of), Families of Choice
Pairing: Snape/Rosmerta, various

Harry & Dudley flee an abusive Vernon to Severus Snape. Severus finds a new home for himself & the boys with dragons and hunt the Horcruxes from there. The dragons, especially one become their allies. Tom R is VERY different.
I've read this epic several times and love it. It starts off asking you to stretch your suspension of disbelief a bit far for some but stick with it - it gets really good very fast and goes on for more than half-a-million words that seem like just enough (but you still aren't sure you want it to end). Dragons! Smart plots! Great world-building and fantastic characterizations all around, pro-Slytherin, without any sustained bashing (except for Vernon) though some characters do get bashed into character development but it's always well-played. Outstanding fic!

Kourrem bint Kemail fulfils a dream.
Absolutely amazing! Kourrem has a great personality for narrating and offers a fantastic and culturally sensitive outsider POV on the events of the last two Alana books that I just adore. Also, the podfic is gorgeous!

"You're dead, Katniss. You've been dead for over one hundred years."
Years after the Great Rebellion, Peeta Mellark buys a newly renovated home in the neighborhood of Victor's Village, seeking a fresh start in life. He's instantly attracted to the girl next door, Katniss, but there's something not quite right about her... Paranormal Everlark
Woah! I love the concept and what's there so far is really well written. I can't wait to see where this goes next! I love how this story unfolds, with all these little hints that some things are different but some things are familiar, that some things Peeta 'knows' are probably wrong, that the world is different and the story is bound to be creative - I have high hopes for this fic and strongly recommend it. (may up the score as more is added)
Strange Things Did Happen Here (on AO3)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Genre: Redo fix-it, Independent!Harry, world-building
Pairing: Harry/Draco/Neville, James/Lily/Sirius, Remus/Severus
Length: Very Long (95,760 words and counting)
The loss of magic had started, as do many things like it, with good intentions. The past century, it was reasoned, had been overshadowed by two of the worst Dark Lords in history. What better way, then, to make sure it never happened again than to stop it before it started? After all it was a well-known fact that those with an affinity for Dark Magic were born with it, so why not tackle the problem at the source? The Department of Mysteries were set on the problem, and two years after the final death of the Dark Lord Voldemort, they released their solution into the world. It worked for all of two months before the magical disease began to mutate beyond their wildest nightmares.
This fic is shaping up to be the newest of the Potterverse independent!Harry and world-building epics. I had a bit of a nostalgia trip finding this fic - it took me back to the kind of fic that was proliferating in the years between Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince, when I joined fandom. Harry Potter fandom may not be hopping like it was then, but this fic is well worth a look, even if you, like me, don't regularly read Potter fandom anymore.
Trichromatic (on AO3)
Genre: Watch-fic, Times-fic, (very good) OC character fic
Length: Medium (20,322 words and counting)
When clerk Sweetpea Hakim makes the impulsive decision to become the city watch's press liaison, she doesn't expect to wind up the avatar to a disgruntled god. Then again, this is Ankh-Morpork, where unfortunately anything is possible.
A new Must Read in Discworld fandom! The main character, a Klatchian clerk named Sweetpea Hakim who decides she really wants to become the Watch's public information officer, is fantastic! Like all watch officers, she has to start on the beat, while also figuring out what exactly a Public Information Officer does and doing it. Do NOT miss this!

1. It isn’t until Amanita says, out of the blue, over the rim of her chai latte, “Would you mind telling Kala that I really liked the book she recommended?”, that Nomi realizes it’s so much more than that. Her girlfriend is not simply accepting the existence of other people’s voices in her head – she is actually conversing with them.
2.“Jesus,” Will says. He is pacing the room, rubbing a distracted hand across his face. His cheeks are flushed, there is sweat pooling in the back of his neck, and he can’t even blame the Mexican heat for that, since the A/C in the apartment is working just fine. Wolfgang looks up from his phone with a smirk. “They are at it again, aren’t they.” It’s not a question.
3. “I should have blown his fucking brains out,” she tells the wall, but at that point, she thinks she might just be channeling Wolfgang.
This is a beautiful series about the friendships and relationships in the cluster&their families/friends and how they enrich each character's life. I especially love the first in the series, epistolary. Neetya is such a fantastic character (so are Nomi and pretty much all of the cluster, but Neetya above them all, imo).

Genre: AU, Pretending to Date Romance
Pairing: Sean Renard/Nick Burkhart
Length: Medium (37,345 words & counting)
“I know this is a lot to take in,” Renard said, spreading his hands and leaning forward over the desk. “But unfortunately, recent circumstances are forcing our hand.”
“Which means we have to date.”
“To give the appearance of dating, yes.”
Nick laughed. “This is insane.”
It's a fairly standard romance trope, but this author is one of the best in the Grimm fandom and this fic is a good example of their work. A nice fic (WIP atm) to add to the bookmarks for Sean/Nick shippers.

A Winchester Family Christmas, 2010. AKA, Best zombie Christmas ever!
Fluffy everyone lives fic! I feel like there aren't a lot of simply happy Supernatural fics so this is sort of a rare gem. I enjoyed the balance of fluff, humor, and character moments.
Good Things Do Happen (on AO3)
Fandom: Hunger Games, Sherlock BBC
Length: Very Long (75,279 words & counting)
Eight years after Mycroft Holmes wins the Hunger Games and becomes the first victor of District Twelve, childhood friends John Watson and Sherlock Holmes' lives are about to be changed forever, again: John Watson gets Reaped into the 74th Hunger Games. But John doesn't know how Sherlock feels - Sherlock doesn't want John to die without knowing he's loved - so, better late than never. Faced up against Careers Irene Adler, Sebastian Moran, and Jim Moriarty, John has to fight to survive to get back to Sherlock - but can he? Does he even want to?
I didn't think it was possible to write a fusion where the main characters were so very in-character as this - Sherlock, John, Mycroft, even Lestrade and Mary, and Moriarity is exactly as creepy (I don't think they did Irene or Molly justice, but they're only minor characters in this fic so it may just be an issue of screen time). The plot is very good too. Warnings for an instance of violent homophobia and for the sociopathy of this career pack. I'm also particularly eager to see if the revolution will come into the story soon.

Mockingjay AU. The one where Coin won't risk it, Katniss crumbles under the weight of a revolution and Peeta has to find his own way out of Snow's clutches. A slow-burn Everlark set in pandemonic Panem, for Johanna supporters and Odesta enthusiasts.
Also, the one where Finnick lives.
WOW! I am seriously hooked on this WIP. I generally love 'minor characters as heroes' stories and this is still one of the best I've read. The plot is good, the characters are great, and it's such a page turner - I check so often for updates. (Score might go up as story continues)

Hello! Would you mind doing an example of not using filter words in a first person point of view? While I know that you can just switch out the pronouns for I/me/my, I just want to see it in action and when you should (and shouldn't) use the filter words. Thank you!the-writers-society-deactivated: Hi there! I would love to! I think I’ll start out with an example with filter words and then cut out the filter words to show you the difference.
For those of you who haven’t seen my post on Filter Words.
Fantastic writing advice if you're struggling to make your first person pov stories seem less passive or reactive!

Fandom: Hunger Games
Genre: Pre-canon, all/mostly OCs
Pairing: various OCs
Length: Long (44,357 words)
In the 25th Hunger Games, to remind the Districts that they had brought the Games on themselves through their choice to rebel, each district was forced to choose its own tributes, rather than have them chosen by a public lottery. These tributes had to face not only the Capitol and, ultimately, the arena from which only one would emerge, but also the fact that their people, their friends and families, had chosen them specifically for the task.
An original story in the haunting dystopia of the Hunger Games 'verse. The original characters are mostly well-written (there is one whose mental illness is, imo, too magical for the 'verse, but it serves a purpose in the story that I'm not sure could have been done any better so it's justifiable). I really like how the premise is laid out and how devastating the voting is shown to be, how the rebel legacy is handled just 25 years into the games, and how the games themselves play out believably within the canon 'verse.

I love fics that make sense of canon in ways you never knew you were missing. This drabble may be short, but it's definitely good for that. Also, Leia is awesome.

Fandom: Hunger Games
Pairing: Maysileee/Haymitch, Ember/Cato, Finch/Marvel, Rain/Crane
Length: Long (85,475 words & counting)
Ember Abernathy, daughter of two Victors, volunteers for the 74th Games to ensure her brother survives. Instead of certain death in the arena, she ends up leading 23 tributes to District 13 after her Gamemaker sister sabotages the Games. But the tributes are abandoned as rebellion erupts, so Ember and Cato alone lead the journey into the wild amidst new friendships and romances.
I absolutely adore this fic, quite possibly even more than canon. It's an active WIP and I check impatiently several times a week, every week for updates. I love the backstory - that Haymitch and Maysilee used the star-crossed lovers thing in their quell and came out dual victors and then were ordered by Snow to have children whenever he wanted something cute for the Capitol. Haymitch, kept mostly sober by Maysilee, and the rest of the Abernathy family have ended up playing a big covert roll in the coming rebellion. Then two of the Abernathy children end up in the 74th games and it's time to act. The story is very well-written, tightly plotted, and creative, the OCs are well-done and the effect is a story that's a real page-turner. I can't wait to see where it goes next.

It turns out that the way to Cato's heart is through his brain. Who knew?
Clever book nerd Finch (aka Foxface) gets a little help prepping for her games from the District 2 mentor who owes her father a favor. In the process, she tells Cato stories of the banned histories she's read while working in the government computer systems. It's a little bit Scheherazade and a little bit cute romance where the heroine is a lot like, well, the kind of people who love fanfic. But there's still the Games, and things go bad fast for Finch and Cato (and even faster for Katniss and Peeta who just aren't important in this story). This is an active work in progress and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Anonymous asked: What if Harry Potter, the chosen one, had turned out to be a squib, how do you think history would have turned out differently?
Okay, this prompt could have been answered in all kinds of ways, including some real downers, but this fic is beautiful and though if may have started as a simple tumblr fic, it is fantastically fleshed out with secondary characters and relationships, with backstory and plot and though it is still short, it's just such a perfect answer to the prompt.
