Author: [fanfiction.net profile] Sinyk
Fandom: Harry Potter
Genre: AU, Independent!Harry
Pairing: Harry/Daphne
Length: Epic (490,097 words)

Author's Summary:
Just how will Dumbledore cope with a Harry who is smart, knowledgeable, sticks up for himself and, worst still, is betrothed? A Harry who has a penchant for losing his temper? Ravenclaw/Smart(alek)/Lord/Harry Almostcanon/Dumbledore

Review:
I wouldn't say Harry is so much angry as informed and supported - he gets a whole host of adult magical mentors before Hogwarts and it makes for an interesting independent!Harry with excellent plotting and character development. I like when independent!harry fics manage to keep Dumbledore from turning into too much of a caricature and this one does, so all around a good fic.

Fandom: NYPL '67 Reference Cards

Pairing: Uncertain Female Caller/Fellow Who's Worth Twenty Seven Million Dollars
Length: Short (1,931 words)

Author's Summary:
New Year's Eve 1966 - a mystery man and a fancy party - what more could a girl ask for?

Review:
I love the New York Public Library's find of old Reference questions. This fic is the imagined backstory to one of the more intriguing cards:
Phone message left mid-afternoon by a "somewhat uncertain female voice" on New Year's Day 1967: "I have two questions. The first is sort of an etiquette one. I went to a New Year's Eve party and unexpectedly stayed over. I don't really know the hosts. Ought I to send a thank-you note? Second, when you meet a fellow and you know he's worth twenty-seven million dollars because that's what the told me, twenty-seven million, and you know his nationality, how do you find out his name?"

The author reveal won't be for a bit yet, but this fic is lovely so I had to rec it right away.

Author: [fanfiction.net profile] FernWithy
Fandom: Hunger Games
Genre: Pre-canon&Alternate POV of canon
Pairing: Haymitch/OFC, Haymitch/Effie
Length: Seriously Epic
Warnings: graphic violence, psychological horror, and pretty much everything else you can expect of Hunger Games victors

Author's Summary:
Series starts with: Sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy has plenty to worry about - a sick mother, a decrepit house, an empty larder. The last thing he's worried about is the Capitol's choice to double the number of Games tributes in a Quell year...
The series follows him through his Victory Tour, his joining the rebellion, his years as a mentor, the canon years, and the revolution.

Review:
Amazingly well-written - in terms of the games and Haymitch's characterization and the slow growth of the rebellion. A great Hunger Games epic.

Review:
It's the day the victors blow the arena in the third quarter quell and that 12 gets firebombed that Gale's stuck reliving. It's the worst day of his life which makes it that much more awful for him. But besides trying to figure out how to stop looping, he's study trying to figure out how he can save as many in 12 as possible when no one believes what he knows is coming.

Genre: Severus as Harry's dad, Snape/Lily, strong!Lily

Length: Very Long (183,204 words)

Author's Summary:
JK said that, given a second chance, Severus would pick Lily. I'm giving Lily a second chance to pick Severus, instead. AU, of course. Some deaths, too.

Review:
Okay, this starts out iffy - James is ridiculously caricatured and Severus is unpleasant... I put off reading this fic for years because I couldn't get past that introduction/setting-up-the-premise. But stick with it. Once the story gets going, things get much better and the characters level out and get much more believable and it's actually an enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of any of the genres listed above.  There's a lot of worldbuilding as the story develops and Snape and Lily and their friends get on with their careers and make changes that have a huge impact on the wizarding world and the progression of the plot.  Very good for fans of Lily, especially.

I have a special love for Emelan fusions and or Parker, Hardison and Eliot so I jumped on this fic as soon as it was posted. Some really good choices were made to translate the characters into the Emelan world - their magics in particular. The characterization of all the characters is spot on too.

Review:
I just got into Dark Matter and have been looking or good fics - it's a really small fandom, unfortunately, but I did find this one that I liked. The characterizations are good and it sets out to answer the total loop that the season finale threw us for in the last minutes which is cool. It's WIP and by a rookie writer (but don't cringe yet, it's truly not bad so don't automatically cringe away from that My First Fanfic tag/warning) and they could probably use some encouragement so if you've seen Dark Matter, definitely give this one a try and consider maybe posting a short comment.

When Sam & Jess move into a smart home, Dean finds an unlikely match in the AI that keeps it running.

Review:
Cas' canon character has always been a bit alien, a bit out of touch, and that translates really well into Cas-as-AI. This is an amazing story about an AI learning to feel and its also a great total-AU Destiel.  Dean's journey is a big part of the story too, and for Charlie fans - she's a great friend to Dean here.

Genre: Friendship, Character Study (Jack)
Length: Short (3,826 words)

The first time she meets the promised Captain Jack Harkness, he's so unaware of his own curse she can barely look at him. The second time, he knows all too well, but is not yet ready. The third time, he stretches out his hand and she takes it.

Review:
Ashildr meets Jack (no prior knowledge of the 12th Doctor series or characters needed, including Ashildr - you could substitute any older human-turned-immortal and the story would still work).  It's a character study for how Jack changes through the series. I really liked the contrast between the two immortals and the sense that their journeys to accepting their new natures has been different and even though Ashildr, whose POV the story is from, seems to think that her view is inevitable and Jack will/does get there eventually, I don't read Jack by the end in the same way as Ashildr reads though there is clear character development that sort of runs parallel - that balance makes for a really interesting dual character study.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Quasar

Genre: Time Travel, Time Travel Romance
Pairing: Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale
Length: Long (60,148 words)

Author's Summary:
Probationary Constable Peter Grant met me for the first time when I walked up to him by the portico of the Actors' Church on a freezing winter night and said, "Hello. What are you up to?" However, I first met Detective Sergeant Peter Grant when he jogged up to my doorstep on a mild autumn afternoon and said, "There you are, sir. It is you, isn't it?"

Review:
A story about one of the worst possible complications of a Time Travel romance.  Can tragedy be averted without destroying time? This isn't a fix it, but there are some fairly large problems that you spend the best part of the story begging the author to work a miracles and have it all turn out in the end.  This story is really well written and tightly plotted, with great suspense of some creative surprises. I like the level of character development and backstory for some of canon's minor characters. I also love several things I can't tell you about without spoiling, but suffice to say it's a very well written Time Travel story.

Title: Claws and Teeth and Tulle
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] lorata
Fandom: Hunger Games
Genre: Original Character, Outsider POV, pre-canon , mentorship/friendship
Length: Short (3,714 words)

Author's Summary: Petra killed ten children on live television; she made love to a beautiful, deadly girl while the bodies cooled around her, sucked another boy's blood off the girl’s mace-callused fingers and angled herself for the cameras, but no, now she’s the little girl who walks with a limp and inspires pity in everyone she meets.
Nobody gets to choose their image, not even Careers. After a final showdown injury that overwrites the rest of Petra's brutal, bloody Games, the girl with District 2's highest kill count has to play the broken doll for an over-sympathetic Capitol audience. At least her mentor knows the truth, and Brutus makes sure his girl doesn't forget it.

Review:
This is a great example of a fanfic whose story forms a dialogue with its canon. This OC character piece is a great exploration of the treatment of Victors and other ways than canon's drugs and sex that the Capitol uses to break them, even, or perhaps especially, the Careers who are brought up from a young age to think of themselves as the strongest and most vicious.

Author: [fanfiction.net profile] ketren / [archiveofourown.org profile] ketren
Fandom: Hunger Games
Genre: AU
Length: Medium/Long (50k words & counting)

Author's Summary:
AU. Gen. When she's too late to step in for her sister at the District 12 reaping, Katniss will stop at nothing to enter the Hunger Games and fight beside Prim, even if it means asking Haymitch for help and sneaking into the reaping of District 3. She'll have to let out a few secrets, make a few allies, and defend her sister to the death – if Prim will even allow the sacrifice.

Review:
Just getting started but already so, so good. Author takes a little creative license to make the premise work, but go with it - it's worth it. I'm already especially loving how this revolves around a Sisters!plot instead of a romance. I also like Haymitch's view and I am really enjoying the bigger roles for Beetee and Wiress.  Also, Prim may be the brains, but Katniss is serious BAMF (just wait til you get to Chapter 8!)

Length: Very Long (158,059 words)

Author's Summary:
In a twist of fate, Gale Hawthorne and Madge Undersee are chosen from the Reaping bowl of the 74th Annual Hunger Games instead. How will they fight? How will they love? There's more than just a rebellion flaming up around them. How will they get out? All Gale wants to do is wake up from this nightmare, but will it be any better when he can see clearly?

Review:
Great read.  I really liked how Gale and Madge had their unique views of what was happening to them and that those views were fundamentally different from Katniss'.  In this AU, some things change, and some stay the same. I wasn't totally happy with the balance of that - I did enjoy the story - I just wish it had been a tiny bit less canon as far as the games go - not that it went exactly the same at all, but, well anyways your mileage may vary. I found the relationship development very believable and the characters were well-written too. There's some parts after the games that I want to praise - especially Katniss' character, but I can't without spoiling some good stuff. It's making it really hard to explain what I liked about this one. I might just have to leave it that I really recommend it.

Length: Very Long (147,795 words)

Author's Summary:
The 74th Hunger Games. The Capitol may be craving star-crossed lovers, but perhaps they are not from the same district. "And for some reason, I have a feeling that Cato is exactly what I was during the tribute parade…formidable."

Katniss and Cato are the victors and the star-crossed lovers of the 74th annual Hunger Games. This is the 3rd Quarter Quell. "Hundreds are dying, uprisings are growing out of control. People are wondering about District 13, wondering what's being hidden there. Chaos. There was no other word to describe it."

Review:
I wasn't sure I was prepared for Katniss/Cato, but this one worked. I also loved the dynamic between Cato and Clove and therefore between Clove and Katniss. I also liked how the relationship change rolled through the story, changing both games in big and small ways. I'd have liked to see more of Haymitch in the 3rd Quell, but the story was abandoned before then.
