Title: My Rhade; My Tyr
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] jmtorres
Fandom: Andromeda
Genre: Character Studies/Portraits
Pairing: Dylan Hunt/Gaheris Rhade, Gaheris Rhade/Beka Valentine, Gaheris Rhade/Seamus Harper, Beka Valentine/Trance Gemini, Andromeda/Dylan Hunt/Gaheris Rhade
Length: Short (1,059 words)

Author's Summary:
Portraits of two Nietzscheans.

Review:
In general, list!fic doesn't thrill me, but I actually like this one - I think the minimalism of the list format works and even helps to strike the right balance between the finer details and the bigger picture of these two complicated characters which makes for really nice character studies/portraits.

I really like both of these AI characters and this fic captures their voices and perspectives really well as it explores the relationship between these two veteran starship AIs as they watch the march of history around them.

Title:  Coda
Author:
Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Fandom:  Andromeda
Genre:  Meta, sort-of-AU
Length: Short
Warnings: possibly offensive religious themes?

Author's Summary:
None given.

Note: For those unfamiliar with the meta drama behind this fic, there's a lot of Andromeda fans who want little or nothing to do with the series about the middle of the second season.  That's when things behind the scenes for the show got kind of crazy and Robert Hewitt Wolfe (the guy who wrote this fic) left the writing team for this show.  That's also where this fic picks up.

Review:
Obligatory fic rec for Andromeda fandom.  It's not often you get fanfiction from the canon creative team.  It's not often you get good fic written in script format.  There's also the interesting and rather pointed way this fic straddles meta and AU.  This is, of course, related to all the drama noted above.  So that's a lot of reasons to read this, beside the fact that its a good story.  I have to admit I stopped watching Andromeda after season 2, not because I knew about the drama but because the series changed and I didn't find it as interesting anymore.  This fic is a cool kind of what-might-have-been.  What I really like about it though is the character voices (for obvious reasons) are spot on and really vivid just like the early episodes on canon.

But I also like to think about what Trance is saying (or maybe its just what I'm reading in to it).  She knows these 6 people are important, legendary heroes, and can/will do amazing, epic, universe-changing things.  But in that story, they get hurt, they die, and they aren't really happy.  So there's also this other, opposite possibility that's not really on the table because Trance has goals too, but in abstract, it's something along the lines of they're just 6 people who are happy and safe together doing something good but closer to normal than to world-changing-amazing.  Fiction often teaches us to aspire to be heroes and maybe that's right, but this fic (at least as I read it) isn't quite sure if that's a good thing or not.

Title: Talk About the Weather
Author: Viridian5
Fandom: Andromeda
Genre: General
Length: Short (Words: 5k)

Author's Summary:
Beka and Harper aren't coming from the same place.

Review:
Weather's supposed to be the safest topic for small talk, right?  Well, in this fic, it's weather that demonstrates that the backgrounds Beka and Harper come from really are so far apart.  I think the contrast presented here is amazing in its simplicity.  Sometimes its hard to get out of one's own head for awhile and try to see things from someone else's perspective but it's fascinating to do.  This isn't a long fic - it's almost like the single moment in anthropology fieldwork (but also just in conversation with someone different, or as new immigrant adjusts to their new home, or when an autistic student has to figure out why their comment wasn't taken the way they intended, or even just when talking to a child with a great imagination) when something finally clicks and you're not just looking at a society from outside anymore - just a moment but it's one that comes with a great big paradigm shift and the world suddenly starts to make sense in a very different way (and so does the way that other people may react to it, think about it, and feel about it).

Title:  Shanghaied!
Author:  Viridian5
Fandom: Andromeda
Pairings: Harper/Original AI characters, Harper/Dylan
Genre: General
Length:  Medium

Author's Summary:
The rescued AI fleet needs repairs and a vacation. And Harper. So they steal him.

Review:
I think the warships as characters are one of the best things about the Andromeda 'verse and I really like all the original A.I. characters in this fic.  I also like Harper (who's the series' Everyman) getting to be awesome and really important to all these warship people.  The shippiness, I'm ambivalent about --- this is one fandom where I prefer gen --- but that's personal preference.
