Title: J'attendrai (I will wait)
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Quasar
Fandom: Rivers of London
Genre: Time Travel, Time Travel Romance
Pairing: Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale
Length: Long (60,148 words)

Author's Summary:
Probationary Constable Peter Grant met me for the first time when I walked up to him by the portico of the Actors' Church on a freezing winter night and said, "Hello. What are you up to?" However, I first met Detective Sergeant Peter Grant when he jogged up to my doorstep on a mild autumn afternoon and said, "There you are, sir. It is you, isn't it?"

Review:
A story about one of the worst possible complications of a Time Travel romance.  Can tragedy be averted without destroying time? This isn't a fix it, but there are some fairly large problems that you spend the best part of the story begging the author to work a miracles and have it all turn out in the end.  This story is really well written and tightly plotted, with great suspense of some creative surprises. I like the level of character development and backstory for some of canon's minor characters. I also love several things I can't tell you about without spoiling, but suffice to say it's a very well written Time Travel story.

Review:
I didn't know I wanted a daemon AU for Rivers of London, but this was really nice. I love how Peter has a whole spiel about his daemon's species - it's very Peter.

Fandom: Rivers of London
Genre: AU, Melleby and Nightingale both survive and both de-age
Pairing: Nightingale/Mellenby
Length: Short (1,071 words)

Author's Summary:
AU in which David Mellenby stayed alive and grew old and then young again with Nightingale at his side as the only other wizard still in office. The two of them spent a considerable amount of time secluded at the Folly hiding from the world and trying to recover from the horrors of the war, before finally finding their way back into the realm of the living.

Review:
Billed as a humor fic, I think it's more of a Feel Good fic. It's adorable. I really like the Mellenby characterization based on what's known and what's fanon and what of Nightingale seems to be historical-wizard typical - it all comes together really well. Nightingale's is good too. And the interactions between the characters are great.

Fantastic coda for Broken Homes - brings just a bit of release (not a resolution, though, but that is what makes it work) for Lesley following the ending of Broken Homes. It's also a great window on a relationship we're informed exists but really don't get to see in canon.

Excellent crossover, great geeky Peter&Lucas friendship fic, touching Henry&Lucas character fic --- all around a really good fic. This brings together two tiny fandoms - you only need to know one or the other to love this fic... knowing both makes it twice as good.

Thanks to London Reads doing the first book in the series, there's been an explosion of interest in and publicity for the Rivers of London series.  One of the events that's part of that was a performance in the Mail Rail tunnels under London.  Doc Brown (a pro-artist who's own fanwork has already been rec'd here) read a short story by the author of Rivers, Ben Aaronovitch.  It's called "King of the Rats".  The video of the performance is on Youtube here.  I had a really hard time following the recording and hard to give up (combination of not-great audio quality and my hearing problem) but luckily, fans [tumblr.com profile] maple-clef and [tumblr.com profile] stardust-rain transcribed it here.  Knowledge of the RoL universe is required but just the first two books will do you.

Lovely little one-shot about Nightingale before Ettersberg and about LGBT history. Excellent characterizations. Set pre-Broken Homes (no spoilers for BH or FS).

Nightingale frowned. “I can't say it does, no. But we'd better check both bodies for vestigia tomorrow and have a look around the hospital.”

Great character piece for Lesley, probably set sometimes during book 2 (no spoilers after book 1). I love the Harry Potter comparison, and I think it reflects Leslie's difficult position and difficult headspace well.

5th gifset in the series and my favorite so far! Warning: spoilers! This one illustrates the book well - I could nitpick but the overall effect is too good to bother.  I also like the careful color palette and the long loops.  I am amazed at the artist's ability to find these clips - it must have been a lot of work and required a lot of patience and ingenuity.

4th gifset in the series, though I do like this one least. I guess I'm nitpicky because 4 is my favorite book. I especially don't like the fancast for Varvara who is a Russian character and the actress chosen just looks so, so British. I love the panel for Skye though - that's perfect. And I too saw that shot in Doctor Who and thought "It's Abagail!" Warning: spoilers!

Third gifset in the series by the same talented and dedicated artist.  I especially like the effect of the title panel with the officers flashlights highlighting the title - very well done.  I don't think there are really plot spoilers in this one so it's safe to view if you haven't read this book yet.

This gifset is second in the series by the same artist and is crafted with the same amazing patience and dedication.  I don't think this one does quite as well as some of the others at illustrating the book - you have to know what happened to be able to see that in this set (so no spoilers here) - but then this book isn't quite as visual as the others either.

The Nightingale at Ettersberg.

Review:
A really evocative fic that really paints a picture of Nightingale at the battle of Ettersberg. This fic is spun really beautifully out of the bits and pieces known about the system of magic (when you have to concentrate on a shape in your mind to cast a spell and you know that at any moment you could overdo it and drop dead from magical brain damage, magical battle becomes much more harrowing) and about the battle (that nearly destroyed magical practice in Europe and has left a shadow hanging over Nightingale all his very long life).

Pairing: Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale

Author's Summary:
A few weeks after the events in Broken Homes, Peter and Nightingale have to deal with multiple drownings in the Hampstead Ponds. The situation is messy. The relationship between England's only two officially sanctioned wizards even more so. Here's to the tiny fandom!

Review:
This fic had me grinning ear to ear and full of warm fuzzy feelings - it may have finally sold me on this ship. The characterizations and voices are very good and the case they have to solve is absolutely awesome with lots of strong world-building and it fits with canon without actually involving any canon supernaturals. The relationship building between the characters is the real star of this fic though - seriously, the feels!  The first fic is rated R, the deleted scene is the NC-17 outtake.

Author's Summary:
You can ask plenty of members of the Metropolitan Police who will assert that it’s my stupid ideas that get me in trouble (especially, to pick an example entirely at random, newly-minted DCI Stephanopoulos) but they’re wrong. Okay, they’re mostly wrong.
Or: Peter can rationalize himself into anything, given long enough. Including a crush on his senior officer.

Review:
Great future fic series! Peter has finished his apprenticeship and is acting as a fully-trained wizard of The Folly and has made it to Detective Sergent in the Met. I really love older, wiser!Peter's characterization here and how it works with Nightingale's character. Also, fluff and interesting (and troublesome and endearingly meddling) new apprentices :)

Title: Northern Lights
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] silver_sun
Fandom: Rivers of London, Shetland (no knowledge of Shetland, a British police procedural TV show, is required to read this fic)
Genre: Casefic, Crossover
Pairing: hints at future Peter/Nightingale
Length: Medium (48,026 words)

Author's Summary:
The theft of three Pictish stone carvings from a museum in London lead Peter and Nightingale to Shetland. The reason for the theft is clear: The stones are ancient storage devices for magical energy. Who took them and why is a lot less so. That Shetland has its own mythology and magics which are far closer to that of Scandinavia than London doesn't help matters.
Between the lack of information, the cold and wet January weather and Nightingale's cold, Peter can't help but wish they were back in London.

Crossover with Shetland. No knowledge of Shetland, which is a police drama set in Shetland, is needed. The story is from Peter's POV, and any information about the three detectives, DCI Jimmy Perez, DS Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh and DC Sandy Wilson, who make up the core cast of Shetland will be found out where needed as Peter does.

Set post Broken Homes for Rivers of London and after series one of Shetland.

Review:
I really enjoyed this fic. The case was interesting and perfectly suited to the canon universe. The way the investigation progressed was believable and well-paced. While I like Thomas/Peter shipping well enough, I still prefer genfic so that may be why I found that aspect of the story to be out-of-character - otherwise, the characterizations were pretty good. I do think this fic badly needed to be proofread (badly enough that I stopped reading it on my ereader after the first chapter and opened it up in my laptop in calibre's editor and fixed my epub as I read -- if you're a serious grammar nazi, message me and I can send you a copy because I really don't want people to avoid reading this fic because it wasn't beta read). It also suffered from the same flaw as Midnight Riot where it tells what was just said in description rather than just giving the dialogue. This makes for a lot of long paragraphs and, at times, a slow pace to what could have been a page turner.

Set shortly after Moon over Soho, about week or so after Peter talks to Lesley.

Review:
This casefic starts off strong and remains decent through to the end, in a small fandom, that's enough to make it worth reading but be forewarned: the case comes together very quickly and ends very, very abruptly.  Seriously, I thought I'd somehow downloaded it wrong and had to go and check online again to see that, yes, it really was the whole fic.  So basically, while it's an interesting case and does deserve a read from all Rivers fans, it could have used a bit more polish in the craft-of-writing department.

This casefic revolves around a purely magical problem that The Nightingale and His Apprentice have to solve (as opposed to a crime for DCI Nightingale and Constable Grant).  This leads it down the path to a really delightful plot twist :)  or is it a characterization twist?  Well anyways, I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it to other Rivers fans.
