Title: Sentiment
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] SaraHerbertWatson
Fandom: Hunger Games, Sherlock BBC
Genre: Fusion
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: Very Long (75,279 words & counting)

Author's Summary:
Eight years after Mycroft Holmes wins the Hunger Games and becomes the first victor of District Twelve, childhood friends John Watson and Sherlock Holmes' lives are about to be changed forever, again: John Watson gets Reaped into the 74th Hunger Games. But John doesn't know how Sherlock feels - Sherlock doesn't want John to die without knowing he's loved - so, better late than never. Faced up against Careers Irene Adler, Sebastian Moran, and Jim Moriarty, John has to fight to survive to get back to Sherlock - but can he? Does he even want to?

Review:
I didn't think it was possible to write a fusion where the main characters were so very in-character as this - Sherlock, John, Mycroft, even Lestrade and Mary, and Moriarity is exactly as creepy (I don't think they did Irene or Molly justice, but they're only minor characters in this fic so it may just be an issue of screen time). The plot is very good too. Warnings for an instance of violent homophobia and for the sociopathy of this career pack. I'm also particularly eager to see if the revolution will come into the story soon.

Review:
A plotty John-centric BBC Sherlock story about psychic powers that cause as many problems as they solve. John's characterization is fantastic. This fic is well-written and understandably popular (has almost 5000 Kudos and almost 2000 bookmarks on AO3). Also [archiveofourown.org profile] lunchee has made a podfic of this.

Wow!!! This picture is amazing. Phenomenal technique. The reflections in the window contrasting against and fading into Sherlock (I would have liked a bit more separation between the reflection and John - he gets a little lost on the edge with the reflection over him). All of this artists' work is amazing. Seriously.

Title: Aliens and Army Doctors
Author: Anonymous
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: SciFi, AU
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: Very Long

Author's Summary:
John/alien!Sherlock: The Holmeses are a part of a visiting or conquering alien race. Mycroft, as their leader or a high-ranking official, comes to ground first to investigate the planet and speak with its people. He brings Sherlock, who manages to wander away from him and bumps right into John Watson — or breaks into his flat.

Review:
I saw it rec'd on tvtropes and thought that alien!Sherlock was something I had to see (and kind of expecting a train wreck (or a vaguely Whovian AU) tbh). I was totally reeled in, amazed at how good this fic is. On the down side: The characterizations are a bit different - Sherlock and Mycroft are more approachable in emotional terms which is non-canon but nice while John develops a weird codependence that I didn't really like but could deal with in service of drawing Mycroft further into the story. Also a con: the LJ thread formating - yuck. On the other hand, the good parts are amazingly good: Mycroft's part in the backstory is really cool and his role in the John&Sherlock relationship is interesting. The worldbuilding for the alien biology and culture is great too.

Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Horror (Lovecraftian), Urban Fantasy, Mystery
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: Medium (17,895 words)

Author's Summary:
In a rural village, Sherlock and John investigate decades-old murders which blur the line between cold case and folklore. In a cursed place, they search for the past... and the past searches for them.

Slight AU with magical and supernatural elements. Asexual, sensual Sherlock/bisexual John in an established (yet poorly defined) relationship.

Review:
Warning: Abandoned. I really like this fic - it's got some intriguing magical world-building and a delightfully creepy Lovecraftian horror feel. BUT, it's cut off just as the story's getting good!! I want to know what happened! Anyways, if you don't mind abandoned WIPs, this is a great one to check out, but if you need to know how a story ends, this is not the fic for you.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] kyaticlikestea
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Humor/Crackfic, Epistolary
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Lestrade/Mycroft
Length: Medium (23,406 words)

Author's Summary:
'Basically, right, this friend of mine- we’ll call him Hamish, to protect his anonymity – is in a bit of a predicament, and he asked me to help him. In short, he’s sort of fallen in love with someone he shouldn’t have. At least, I think he’s fallen in love with him. He’s not sure. He says that every time he sees this person he really wants to throw a sharp, heavy object at their head but also sit on a bench with them whilst ‘Out of Reach’ by Gabrielle is playing and kiss them quite a lot, so I think he’s probably in love. Apparently. So Hamish told me.'

Or, the one in which John writes a blog entry about how his friend is in love with his best friend and his friends are not even slightly helpful in the comments section.

Review:
Epistolary fic composed of blog entries and comments - most of the story here happens in the comments section. 100% crackfic humor - very light-hearted.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] DemandMeNothing
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Character Study, Psych issues, Pre-canon
Pairing: Sebastian Moran/James Moriarty
Length: Epic (346,956 words)

Author's Summary:
Jim Moriarty is a troubled child. At only eight years old he's been moved from Dublin to a London care home for difficult youngsters, having attempted to kill his parents and baby sister in a house fire. His roommate is ten year old Sebastian Moran, a painfully shy but incredibly violent little boy.

Review:
I saw this fic rec'd as a must read non-Neurotypical character fic with the reccer saying it was spot on for Borderline Personality Disorder so I had to give it a try. I know next to nothing about BPD so I can't really comment on that aspect, but I do know that Moriarty makes a lot more sense as a character to me now having read this fic which is narrated from his POV so I wanted to pass on the rec. I have to admit I didn't make it very far proportionately into the 350k words, but I recommend at least giving it a try as a great character study of Moriarity.

Author's Summary:
She held back from correcting them, because the truth was even more absurd and still as hopeless. It never was Sherlock.

Review:
I think most people would assume this fic is just another threesome romance, but I have to argue for this being one of the better friendship fics in the fandom and I think, screen time wise, the story is pretty evenly split in its focus so don't tune out if the ship tags aren't your thing. I really like Molly's characterization here - competent, caring, good at reading people but lacking other people skills, just a little eccentric but enough that it makes sense that she'd take the far more eccentric Holmes family in stride. I also really like Sherlock's characterization here and if you prefer to read Sherlock as lying about having sociopathy to cover up some other neurovariance, you'll like him in this one too and really like how Molly acts as his friend in this story.

Fandom: Sherlock BBC, His Dark Materials
Genre: daemon AU, kidfic (Sherlock and Mycroft as kids - pre-canon)
Pairing: Sherlock/Victor Trevor
Length: Medium (31,720 words)

Author's Summary:
Mycroft is just hoping he doesn't have to kill Sherlock's daemon in her sleep to help Sherlock live to see adulthood. It might as well be his prime directive, because nobody else seems capable of doing it.
A His Dark Materials fusion that follows the Holmes brothers from childhood.

Review:
This isn't your typical daemon AU - it's just as much a fic about Sherlock and Mycroft growing up and it does that really well. It does some interesting things with daemons too as it looks at mental and personality disorders in world with daemons - Sherlock's daemon hates him and, despite taboo, Sherlock is very close to Mycroft's daemon.  The fic as a whole has good characterizations and the friendship/sibling relationship between the brothers is lovely.  This one isn't finished and I hope the author will continue.

Pairing: Molly/Mycroft
Length: Medium (38,526 words)

Author's Summary:
After Sherlock’s fall, Molly finds herself spending a lot of time with his brother, Mycroft. What unfolds might seem strange, but is ultimately very simple.

Review:
This fic was rec'd as part of AO3's Feedback Fest for International Fanworks Day, otherwise I wouldn't have found it, but I'm glad I did. In some ways, it's a simple fic. The story revolves very tightly around the romance plot but it does that plot very well. I wasn't into Molly/Mycroft before but now I'll have to check it out further. I really like Molly's character in this fic - in canon, it's hard to see her except as John sees her which obviously isn't all there is to her but she's much more developed as a character in this fic and I especially like how she's given a good ability to read people that doesn't really translate into good people skills. Unfortunately, no updates since October so I suspect this fic is abandoned with only 5/7 chapters posted. Fortunately though, it does kind of have a resolution to it where it stops so maybe give it a try even if you don't like abandoned stories.

Review:
Have a romance rec for Valentine's Day ! The summary outlines the premise of the fic very well and I think it's a lovely variation on the standard soulmate (Red String of Fate trope) fic. It's a sweet romance while also an interesting casefic, which is cool. The case even involves the tropefic premise!

Review:
I've yet to read the fic this story illustrates but I added it to my reading list because of this cover art. There's some great design choices here and clearly the artist has strong technique and can manage lots of layers. The colors are vibrant and I love this artist's use of fandom icons - the little Sherlock head with the fandom text - that's very nicely done and helps show what to expect from the story. I love the use of the white moonlight to draw the eye from the moon at the top to the title and author to the grass at the bottom. I also LOVE the font - I wonder if it was hand drawn or downloaded from somewhere? The lighting between the layers of tree branches is done well too. My only slight criticism would be that its very busy and some great details like the bats and the jack-o-lattern get lost to the tree branches. Otherwise, I love it.

Fandom: Sherlock
Genre: One Character, Multiple Lives
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: Short (~9k words)

Author's Summary:
1. There are days when he nearly forgets about his Samaritan. (Watches 'verse additional material, non-canon compliant for Watches 'verse or for the TV show, just a theoretical snippet following Elsewhere Come Morning. Followed by Secrets in Plain Speech.)

2. The problem is never that of trusting John. It's simply that he knows himself too well. (Watches 'verse additional material, non-canon compliant for Watches 'verse or for the TV show, just a theoretical snippet following Elsewhere Come Morning, following on from the equally theoretical Looked You Up On the Internet Last Night.)

Review:
If you liked Watches 'Verse, here's a bit more, but be aware that they're very brief and very fragmented. The second one in particular I found a bit confusing at times because Sherlock is making a distinction between his Samaritan and an assassin and there was a comment about Moriarity and I wasn't sure if that Sherlock was confused about whether his Samaritan/Assassin was one of Moriarity's people or what.

Length: Very Long (148,920 words)

Author's Summary:
A post-Reichenbach story universe where John became a hunter during Sherlock's time away- while partnered with Mary Morstan, his mentor and a woman born into a long line of hunters. Things get a bit tricky when Sherlock finally returns two and a half years later. How in the world is John supposed to explain all this?

Minor crossover with the Supernatural (TV series) universe. Only brief cameos by the characters of Supernatural.

Review:
This fic is, of course, Jossed by series 3 of Sherlock, but read it anyways :)  This fic could have gone so wrong (personally, I think a lot of Superlock, SuperWhoLock... etc usually does), but instead it's wonderful.  It works in a way that doesn't bend either fandom too far out of shape, presents great cases, and builds a central romance character arc that's fairly decently done (I'm so not a romance fan - I could have had more of the cases and less of the shipping drama but that's just me).  It's also a fantastic crossover or fusion where the Sherlock world has hidden hunters like the Supernatural series and throws in this added dimension of John becoming a part of that world while Sherlock is gone and then feeling like he has to keep it from him when he returns (that part makes more sense if you're coming to this fic from Supernatural fandom than Sherlock fandom - in SPN, there's enormous taboos and very real fears about reading anyone in on the realities of the supernatural.  If you're just coming at it from Sherlock, you may be grumbling at John to just tell him already, and wondering why Sherlock hasn't just eliminated everything else and deduced what's left (however impossible) already).  The characterization of Sherlock is also great - it gets the ''sociopathic!Sherlock who is genuinely in love with John'' right and that's really rare in and of itself.

Review:
This is an absolutely epic fic, both in length and in scale and it's really a must read for anyone who belongs to both these fandoms.  That said, I did feel it lagged in places - its certainly no page turner.  Still, I loved how solid a story it is - it's written without room for doubt so even a couple of objectively crazy things are made to seem totally plausible so major kudos to the author for that.  This is also one of those crossover-done-right fics.  It's easy to have Harry adopted by a crossover character, but making it work as a story all its own is special and this fic does that.

Review:
Most John-and-Sherlock-work-for-Torchwood fics fail to impress me, but this one I liked. It's still a bit on the shallow side, but just a little bit. Whereas most of the others are just an excuse to put the John and Sherlock in the same room as Jack, this one has an actual case (Torchwood style) and Sherlock and John are actually competent and contributing without overwhelming the Torchwood characters and they manage to stay in character throughout, so all around a good fic.

Detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin investigate a series of incidents when Portland becomes host to a series of dangerous, unprovoked riots and an international serial killer. In London, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have their own string of odd cases that eventually create a rift between Lestrade and Sherlock.

But when a double homicide attracts international attention, the consulting detectives collide with an American who seems to have incredible insight into not only the current case, but their recent oddities. Unfortunately, his odd secrecy makes him more enigmatic than helpful, and his presence seems to attract an undue level of violence.

National and investigative rivalries, hidden knowledge, and a dangerous political movement cloud the work of an American Grimm and the consulting detectives.

Review:
This is a really twisted casefic written for the Case Story Big Bang and it keeps you guessing, even if you do know both fandoms well. It's written in the converging plotlines format so the two fandoms start out fairly separate and slowly converge. I sometimes felt like it was a little disjointed or not quite fully thought through, but it's overall a good fic. Review:
I'm a huge fan of paranormal casefic/Urban Fantasy in general, so naturally I really liked that element of this one.  I also enjoyed the combination with a historical gay romance and the contemporary ace romance in this fic, plus the ghost character is really interesting.  But what I liked most is that this fic speaks to that element of ACD's Sherlock that is that whole "How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" which is something that the BBC Sherlock doesn't usually get to be (probably in an effort to maintain his fairly abrasive BBC canon personality) so it was really nice to see that come up in this fic.
