Review:
Cas' canon character has always been a bit alien, a bit out of touch, and that translates really well into Cas-as-AI. This is an amazing story about an AI learning to feel and its also a great total-AU Destiel.  Dean's journey is a big part of the story too, and for Charlie fans - she's a great friend to Dean here.

Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: Time Travel (sort of), Romance, a little bit of a casefic
Pairing: Castiel/Dean, Sam/OFC
Length: Very Long (110,801 words)

Author's Summary:
AU after Season 8, episode 6, "Southern Comfort." Dean goes to sleep in a motel room in Texarkana, and he wakes up 17 years old, in his childhood bedroom in Lawrence, Kansas, 1996. He has no idea how he got there, why his parents are still alive, why his brother is an adorable freshman with no memory of his adult life, and why the only ally he has in this place is the angel he left behind in Purgatory – somehow also 17 years old. They have to get out, that's the important thing. Only, falling in love with his angel wasn't a part of the plan....

Review:
Set immediately post-Purgatory, this is a good fic for people who used to love Supernatural and lost interest recently (like me). This fic is very well-written, has great characterizations of canon characters and OCs, and has some strong plotting too. Dean wakes up to a world where he's out as bi in his 90s midwestern high school which is really tough (warning for a seriously violent hate crime at one point) but it also leads to some really touching moments where Dean gets support from his dad. And then when it looks like everything has finally worked out well, you get a bonus second happy ending on top of that. Lovely story.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Safiyabat
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: Pre-canon, casefic, families - good and bad
Length: Long (51,484 words)
Warnings: a lot of very triggery abuse depicted (emotional, psychological, physical, neglect)

Author's Summary:
The Winchester Family Business relocates to Tully, New York in the summer of 1993 in pursuit of what John believes to be a vengeful spirit. Initially John's intention is to leave no trace of their time in Tully, but Sam finds a way to make some friends anyway. The case turns out to be more complicated - and personal - than any of the Winchesters could have imagined. (Sam is 10, Dean is 14)

Review:
Very well-written case fic that really shows young Sam's POV. The case is a good one for Sam to try to figure out his views of good and evil and whether the world of Supernatural hunting is really as clear cut as his family makes it out to be. Beware though - the abuse from John and Dean on Sam and from John on Dean are really heavy and potentially triggery.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] x_strangeangels
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: Historical AU, Historical Romance, Romance ("corset ripper")
Pairing: Dean/OFCs, Sam/OFC
Length: Long (~90k words)

Author's Summary:
In 1863, Mary Winchester — beloved Wife of John Winchester and adored Mother of Samuel and Deane — was cruelly lost within a fire that claimed the Winchester family's home.  Since that day, a bereaved John Winchester has traveled throughout Europe, tracking the foul creature that perpetrated such a cruel trick upon his family; raising his sons to follow in his footsteps.
Twenty-two years later, the Winchester brothers still hunt the beast.  Armed with Samuel's inventions and Deane's uncanny ability to bring down any prey, the Winchesters travel through Great Britain and Europe, following clues they receive in the form of mysterious letters — and Samuel's disturbing visions.

Review:
While normally I run away fast from any fic that described itself as an anything-ripper, I couldn't not try a historical AU that maintains the fantasy/horror aspect of Supernatural and I did enjoy it.  The romance heroine, Penelope, is a decent character and so is Vertiline, the other romance heroine (2 brothers = 2 romance heroines), later on and even though romance isn't my thing, that arc wasn't bad (I'm pretty sure that translates, through the cloud of my distaste for romance novels, to a ringing endorsement - just so you know).  I really liked the supernatural casefic arc though.  Its a little Hounds of the Baskervilles, a little Jules Verne, plenty of the canon-style horror, and it proved an interesting mix written in an exciting voice.  And besides that, there's just nothing else like this fic in the fandom so it also deserves a read on those grounds.

Review:
Crossover casefic that does justice to both worlds and both sets of characters.  Grown-up Harry leads a team of aurors against a ton of dementors and crosses paths with the Winchesters who, given their history, are unsurprisingly ill-equipped to handle the dementors themselves. It's nothing I've seen done before and I really liked the dynamic of the very competent Harry and the Winchesters receiving some help for once.

Author's Summary:
The Leverage crew takes on the case of Mindy who's trying to prove that her husband wants to kill her for her money. But when Cliff - the husband - is found dead, things start to go wrong. The Feds show up to question Mindy, but the two guys' badges are about as real as Hardison's FBI badge - something that Eliot realizes pretty much right away. With a mysterious death and two fake FBI agents in the mix, the case takes off in a direction that Parker, Eliot and Hardison could never have guessed.

Review:
Straight up casefic as far as Leverage is concerned until the bad guy turns up dead and their surveillance caught nothing. The Leverage team and the Winchesters team up to solve a haunting/murder. It's written in Supernatural style but mostly from the POV of the Leverage characters. I missed the Leverage style humor and characterization work, but understand how that might not have worked in a Supernatural casefic. Otherwise, it's a good mystery story.

Fandom:  Sherlock, Supernatural
Genre:  Crossover/fusion, Romance, Paranormal
Pairing:  John/Sherlock, John&Mary, John/Victor, Sherlock/Victor, Lestrade/Molly
Length: Very Long (148,920 words)

Author's Summary:
A post-Reichenbach story universe where John became a hunter during Sherlock's time away- while partnered with Mary Morstan, his mentor and a woman born into a long line of hunters. Things get a bit tricky when Sherlock finally returns two and a half years later. How in the world is John supposed to explain all this?

Minor crossover with the Supernatural (TV series) universe. Only brief cameos by the characters of Supernatural.

Review:
This fic is, of course, Jossed by series 3 of Sherlock, but read it anyways :)  This fic could have gone so wrong (personally, I think a lot of Superlock, SuperWhoLock... etc usually does), but instead it's wonderful.  It works in a way that doesn't bend either fandom too far out of shape, presents great cases, and builds a central romance character arc that's fairly decently done (I'm so not a romance fan - I could have had more of the cases and less of the shipping drama but that's just me).  It's also a fantastic crossover or fusion where the Sherlock world has hidden hunters like the Supernatural series and throws in this added dimension of John becoming a part of that world while Sherlock is gone and then feeling like he has to keep it from him when he returns (that part makes more sense if you're coming to this fic from Supernatural fandom than Sherlock fandom - in SPN, there's enormous taboos and very real fears about reading anyone in on the realities of the supernatural.  If you're just coming at it from Sherlock, you may be grumbling at John to just tell him already, and wondering why Sherlock hasn't just eliminated everything else and deduced what's left (however impossible) already).  The characterization of Sherlock is also great - it gets the ''sociopathic!Sherlock who is genuinely in love with John'' right and that's really rare in and of itself.

Review:
It's not easy to get me to like a fic which is just the point of view of an inanimate, non-person object, even when that object is the Impala which is so important to Supernatural and the Winchesters that it had a canon ode to it.  I'm not quite sure how or why - there's not one thing I can put my finger on and say 'this is what makes it work' - but somehow this fic is good so I figure it should get a rec.

Title: Safe as Houses, Safe in Arms
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] anarchycox
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: AU
Pairing: Dean/Benny
Length: 5,457 words and counting

Author's Summary:
The Winchesters are hunters. They have been since Mary was murdered by a demon. It took them a couple years but John Winchester found it and killed it, but as like most, got sucked into the Hunter Life. He trains his boys to hunt and they excel but Sam hates it. He gets a full ride and heads off to Stanford, keeping sort of in touch with Dean (they see each other every six months). Eventually Dean and John just go their separate ways, their hunting styles are too different. Dean is a damn good hunter, but word is slowly leaking out that he occasionally lets monsters go, other hunters start to distrust him. He lets a vampire Lenore go, and Gordon Walker beats the hell out of him. Dean is alone, tired, and a little broken and sitting in The Roadhouse when a stranger offers him a very strange job.

Review:
This is a really interesting AU that I am very impatiently waiting for updates on. Dean runs a halfway house for reformed/reforming monsters and it is really wonderful. It's a bit more Urban Fantasy/everyday magic than canon because he lives surrounded by the supernatural and Loki tends to fill requests for things magically by snapping them up - basically, it gets a different feel from canon without actually changing any of the rules of the canon 'verse which I think is really great from a storycraft perspective as well as just being interesting. There's not a ton of story yet, but it's definitely one to watch.

Great casefic with John and teenage Sam and Dean on the same case as Scully and Mulder. These two 'verses don't always blend well together (sometimes Mulder is made to seem stupid for suspecting aliens of everything instead of supernatural forces) but this fic does a good job - in part because the Winchesters weren't entirely right either - but you'll see how that works out when you read it ;)

Review:
This AU doesn't seem very auspicious from the summary and it's true that it's not int he same class as some of the really ambitious epic AU's in Supernatural fandom, but the author makes a lot of tiny good choices throughout the story that take the plot to interesting places and keep the story from ever getting boring. Serious Supernatural fans will like this lesser-known but still high-quality fic.

Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: AU (Castiel, Gabriel and Uriel are human but other mythological creatures exist as in canon)
Pairing: Castiel/Dean
Length: Medium (57,593 words)

Author's Summary:
When his partner Uriel, betrays him, Federal Agent Castiel Novak is saved from becoming a ritual sacrifice by brothers Dean and Sam Winchester. Discovering the world of the supernatural and learning about werewolves, wendigoes, vampires and things that go bump in the night also leads to learning more about Dean and the strange life he and his brother lead. The more he learns, the more Castiel finds himself drawn into Dean’s world and toward Dean himself.

Review:
Castiel was a normal FBI agent until he almost became a ritual sacrifice and that starts him down the road to becoming Supernatural's very own Fox Mulder. The alternate perspective on the Winchesters is interesting and while it's a bit confusing at first figuring out who is human and what hunting methods have been simplified and what is still supernatural and/or even more complicated in the fic verse, it ends up working out well if you can just go with it.

When Derek is killed by a rival alpha, the pack will stop at nothing to get him back. Even if that means blackmailing the most dangerous hunter duo this side of hell. Whatever. That whole devil thing was probably totally exaggerated, anyway.

Review:
I let this one sit bookmarked but unread for months, I think mostly because of the title and how these two fandoms don't mesh easily, but this fic did a really good job with the latter.  One of the ways that is accomplished is summed up by Sam: "The Argents are to werewolves what we are to demons, Dean."  The "hold the door" thing refers to Lydia and what she can apparently do with the doors between the realms of the dead and the world of the living as a result of Peter's curse (this is from before Teen Wolf canon decided she was anything but human).  This fic starts out with BAMF!pack, which is great, and quickly goes to dark and scary places literally and figuratively.  The events in Purgatory are properly horrifying while at the same time getting some feels in both when Benny's return and as Laura meets Derek and explains how Purgatory works as a place good monsters pass through to get to heaven where the rest of their family is waiting for them.  Overall, this is a good fic and Maichan's cover art is lovely too.

Author's Summary:
In a small town in the Cascade Mountains, people are dying, bodies found mauled by some kind of beast. The Winchesters think it's a werewolf and plan to hunt it. Ex-cop Jim Ellison and his partner Blair are also hunting the creature. The four are uneasy allies, but Jim's suspicions of the brothers lead him to uncover their family secret.

Review:
I don't normally read wincest (I don't say that to invite the next battle in the epic fandom feud that is Supernatural Ship Wars, just to point out that if that's your thing, this probably isn't the rec journal for you) but the allure of a Sentinel/Supernatural casefic won out this time.  Lucky for me, really, because this is a very good fic.  It fuses the two fandoms really well, bringing Blair and Jim into the the fantasy-horror world of Supernatural (the Sentinel-canon explanation for Sentinel senses stands though) when Sam and Dean meet them on a case that requires the talents and expertise of both pairs to solve. I also really like the depiction of Jim and Blair's relationship in this one.

This is a great pre-series fic for Supernatural and an outsider POV fic for both canons. It works so well in part because both sets of characters are in some way "in the know" about weird stuff though from different enough perspectives to not see eye to eye, and they don't understand the full significance of each other in the circumstances that they meet so the insights they get are different than they might be under "professional" circumstances like a lot of other Supernatural / law-enforcement-fandom-of-choice crossovers. I particularly like the little character insights this fic gives about each of the characters.

Review:
This is a really powerful fic that I'd love to see continued in a series. It's Henricksen, if he hadn't died in the massive demon attack just after finding out the truth about hunters and the supernatural. What I really like though, is that in contrast to Supernatural canon which is very big on non-humans being Always Chaotic Evil, this fic is very much about the shades of grey because Henricksen is still a law enforcement officer and definitely comes at hunting from the point of view that he can't just kill someone because they happen to be the wrong species in the general vicinity of a crime. So when Henricksen meets Lenore, who is always awesome btw, he's ready to accept her help and even defend her from the other hunter on the case on just his gut feeling and Dean's endorsement of her. It's nice to see Supernatural 'verse written that way.
