Title: Qualia
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] imogenbynight
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: Scifi AU (Near future Earth, AIs, no aliens, no space), interspecies romance, asexual romance
Pairing: Castiel/Dean
Length: Medium (26,600 words)

Author's Summary:
When Sam & Jess move into a smart home, Dean finds an unlikely match in the AI that keeps it running.

Review:
Cas' canon character has always been a bit alien, a bit out of touch, and that translates really well into Cas-as-AI. This is an amazing story about an AI learning to feel and its also a great total-AU Destiel.  Dean's journey is a big part of the story too, and for Charlie fans - she's a great friend to Dean here.

Title: Need To Know
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] ellen_fremedon
Fandom: Torchwood, Star Trek
Genre: Crossover, PWP
Pairing: Jack/Naraht
Length: Medium (10,523 words)

Author's Summary:
Jack loves working the Federation timezone. You meet the most interesting people.

Review:
Found this rec'd on fancake as the best truly-omnisexual!Jack fic and decided I had to read it.  It is that, and also a fantastic sci fi. I usually avoid food kink as a personal squick but I didn't pay attention to what I was getting into and then this appeared and I had to keep reading:

Excerpt:
"I'm not asking you to spawn," Jack said. "I'm asking if you'd like to have dinner with me." He leaned down and spoke low. "I want to watch you enjoy something else as much as you enjoyed that hull plating," he said, "and I want to know you're letting me." Just the thought was making his heart pound, and he was pretty sure Naraht could tell. Anyone watching should have been able to tell, should have seen in his face what a wonderfully, filthily carnal proposition he'd just made to this sweet young thing, and yet people were walking past as though their conversation couldn't be anything but professional. "That's what I want," Jack said. "But only if you want it, too."

I so rarely read straight PWP (I'm gray-ace so not really my thing) but that part actually really speaks to me (in some ways better than things written by other aces) and I almost never see that kind of thing represented so I had to come and share it here, and the story is so well written and wonderfully science fictiony, even the food part, that I didn't even mind the food kink.

Title: Domestic Bliss and Other Nonsense
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] moonstalker24 , [tumblr.com profile] moonstalker24
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Genre: Future-fic, Asexual Romance, Fluff
Pairing: Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Length: Short (8,899 words)

Author's Summary:
"So, I think we should get married."

Peter chokes, fumbles for a second, then manages to set his mug of tea down on the coffee table. He turns to look at Stiles, who is sprawled over the end of the couch, flipping through an old book.

"What?" Peter asks.

Stiles turns bright amber eyes on the stunned werewolf. "We should get married."

“Why?”

“So all the books can be in one place.”

Review:
OMG this fic is adorable - pretty much the best ace ship fic I've found in a long time. Unlike a lot of Stiles/Peter, it's not creepy in the least - it's set up well in the future (Peter and Stiles are both college professors by this time) and Peter has a bit of a demented sense of humor but isn't insane/homicidal/feral so no worries there. The first dozen paragraphs or so, don't get freaked out by what sounds like the start of seriously cheesy bad!fic - just trust that this is going to work out to a good fic because it really, really does. It just throws you in to an established future where Stiles and Peter have been the pack's Research Team for so long that they've dealt with the canon issues, become friends, etc. There's the ace shipping in this fic, plus the Stiles and Peter pranking their less observant packmates - it's just a really sweet fic. I think the best part though is how wonderfully the author has shown the feelings between Peter and Stiles - I wish more fic writers would show the feelings between romantic partners more like this even in non-ace ship fics.

Title: Sum of Its Parts series
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] KouriArashi
Fandom: Teen Wolf, (and 1 Veronica Mars crossover, but just the very basic knowledge of Veronica Mars is enough to still enjoy that story)
Genre: AU (Human!Pack-Alpha!Stiles)
Pairing: Scott/Allison, Stiles/Derek (Ace relationship), Stiles/Erica (friends with benefits),
Length: Seriously Epic!!! (790,639 words & counting)
Warnings: Gay-bashing, Extreme Violence, Psychological Trauma, Abuse (canon Isaac) and Bullying (teens vs teens, and adult vs. teen)

Author's Summary:
Stiles deals with the aftermath of being abducted by Peter Hale and left for dead. It's harder than he would have thought to accept his place in the pack when he's convinced that he's the 'weak one' and can't protect himself. Fortunately, Scott and Sheriff Stilinski are there to help, and to nag Derek until he helps, too.

Review:
Okay, so I know I rec'd this series more than a year ago, but a lot more has been added to it since then, including a fantastic Veronica Mars crossover so I think it bears rec'ing again. I've only just finished that crossover and hopped on to rec it.  KouriArashi has made my list of reliably amazing authors so I trust the rest of her work to be well worth reading already. Do be aware what you're getting yourself into though... this series is a (somewhat sprawling) epic and its very hard to put down. Do not start reading when you should be sleeping, working, or otherwise engaged... or when you anticipate needing to do any of those things within the hour.

But about the story itself, and the crossover specifically... I love the characterizations. Stiles can be a little overbearing sometimes, and Derek more submissive in proportion, which can be a bad thing to some (and usually me as well) but I think that's part of what sold me on Stiles as a Human!Pack-Alpha. The Veronica Mars characters are --- from what I can remember, at least --- well characterized too.  It assumes basic knowledge of season 1 and then rewrites season 2 with some but not all of the canon plot points (no knowledge of season 2 needed).  Another thing I like in this fic is the immense care and respect taken with mental health issues. In fiction, you often find that characters are put through horrible things and then expected to just get on with hero-ing when most people would be curled up in a corner sobbing. This fic takes just as much care with the healing as it does with the adventures and gets some really exciting plots and a lot of great character development out of it too.

Rec List Rec: Ace Admiral's 2012 Asexy Fic list
[tumblr.com profile] AceAdmiral  has an (old) Asexy Fic rec list with a lot of recs across a lot of fandoms.  The list is a couple of years old now and the quality varies GREATLY, but it's nice to see so many ace fics in one place.  I'd already read quite a few and rec'd some of those here already - and I'll probably rec some more later, but check it out, especially if you read fandoms I don't have tags for because I may or may not get around to those myself.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] oliversnape
Fandom: Harry Potter
Genre: post-canon, AU
Pairing: Harry/Snape
Length: Long (72,770 words)

Author's Summary:
The Ministry needs to approve Severus Snape's application for him to start his life again after the war. Harry Potter has set himself up with a non-dangerous specialist muggle career. Neither have been particularly good at avoiding trouble for long.

Review:
World-building with lots of details and good characterization make this slow-build ship fic really good. Harry's muggle career, identifying counterfeit pound notes and proving how they were faked, is interesting and far from cliched. There's also details about the post-war Ministry rebuilding and how it affects the lives of the ordinary people like Snape.

Title: Love Is For Children series
Author:[archiveofourown.org profile] Ysabetwordsmith
Fandom: Avengers/Marvel 'verse
Genre: Chosen Family, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Teambuilding
Length: Epic (248,973+ words)

Author's Summary:
In The Avengers, Natasha Romanova says "Love is for children." It's an expression of life as she knows it, and fits the harsh background most of the Avengers have experienced. Trouble is, people don't do very well without love. In particular it's impossible to form a good team if the members don't care about each other.

So Phil Coulson comes up with a teambuilding exercise to resolve that problem. If love is for children ... then he'll arrange that experience for them. The result is an exploration of nonsexual ageplay to allow a group of very powerful, very broken people to patch up some of the gaps in their lives.

Most of the stories are very sweet in tone and make for good comfort reading. However, canon gives these characters some very unpleasant pasts, and that comes up as they process the aftermath. So the tone does vary, and some stories are more intense than others. They deal with different characters, relationships, and sensitive issues.

Review:
So I said when I rec'd the first story in the series that I would get around to reviewing the series as a whole later and now that I've read on I have to say I am absolutely in love with this series. Part of that is that I'm into caretaking and competence (including emotional competence) in a big way, both of which are major themes in this series but even if you don't share those interests, there are lots of awesome things about this series. I love that it has a strong asexual character in Clint and aromantic character in Natasha. I love the Comfort-fic aspect as so many characters get help dealing with their abusive childhoods - this fic will leave you full of warm fuzzy feelings :), that's for sure. I love that is focuses on the hard work of teambuilding and becoming a Chosen Family. I also adore all the links to further information that the author took the time to include at the end of each chapter - it really shows that she did her research and it gives the reader a place to start looking for more information on a lot of interesting subjects. So basically, this is another very long story, but totally worth the time.

Length: Short (6,023 words)

Author's Summary:
From a long-since lost prompt on the kinkmeme - Donovan must spend a night at Baker Street, and is surprised at the domesticity and affection between Sherlock and John when they're not on the job.

Review:
OK, I had a bit of trouble with the basic premise - that if Donovan's apartment were suddenly uninhabitable, she'd stay over at 221B Baker St. - but this is a nice asexual romance fic so that makes up for it.

This one is another brand new Trope Bingo fic. It's short, but it captures the craziness of working with Root and how amazingly Shaw manages it and gets on with being BAMF really well.

Title: The Master of Latham Hall
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Kryptaria
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Casefic, Paranormal, Historical Romance, Asexual Romance
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, OMC/OMC, OMC/OFC
Length: Medium (47,679 words)
Warnings: historical homophobia, historical imperial attitudes, suicide, violent hauntings
note: rec'd on fancake

Author's Summary:
Ten years after meeting Sherlock Holmes, John Watson has successfully kept only one secret from the world's only consulting detective: the most important secret he's ever had.

Now, drawn into an impossible web of murders at Latham Hall, John learns the terrible price a man must pay for keeping certain things secret.

Review:
I'm a huge fan of paranormal casefic/Urban Fantasy in general, so naturally I really liked that element of this one.  I also enjoyed the combination with a historical gay romance and the contemporary ace romance in this fic, plus the ghost character is really interesting.  But what I liked most is that this fic speaks to that element of ACD's Sherlock that is that whole "How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" which is something that the BBC Sherlock doesn't usually get to be (probably in an effort to maintain his fairly abrasive BBC canon personality) so it was really nice to see that come up in this fic.

Parker doesn't understand why it has to be more complicated than: "I want to be with you, I just don't want to sleep with you." It's everyone else who has the problem. (Parker as a biromantic asexual)

Review:
LGBT fest fic from a few years ago. I've just found Leverage and I really like some of the quirky characters, especially Parker, Eliot, and Hardison. I think this fic does a good job with Parker's characterization and manages to be a good portrayal of romantic asexuality and coming out as ace too.

Pairings: Scott/Allison, Derek/Stiles
Length: Super Epic (Words: 400k and counting)

Review:
Aw man, this story is epic! Tons of adventure, action, suspense, feels, and great characters. It's a real page turner. Also, alpha!Stiles is awesome. His asexual relationship with Derek is amazing too. And Sheriff Stilinki and Mrs. McCall are amazing in this one too. And the world-building is different from canon but very well done.

Review:
Possibly the fluffiest fic I've ever read.  Sherlock's voice is also exceptionally well done in this story.  The drugs explanation at the very beginning strikes me as a bit odd, but even if you don't like it, just get through it, accept the handwave Sherlock 'logic' and get on with enjoying the rest of the story in all its fluffy goodness.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] etothepii
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Genre: Romance
Length:  Short (Words: 8,400)

Author's Summary:
Sherlock is asexual. John is not. Possibly, Sherlock should have told him this before they had sex.

Review:
Sherlock Holmes is probably one of the most famous asexual characters out there, but the BBC show has prevaricated on the issue as if an asexual lead would totally kill the show.  Nevertheless, there's some great ace!Sherlock fics out there and this is one of them.  The character voices are pretty good, especially John and the way they deal with the conflict about their own interests is very much in character, I think.
