Fandom:
  M*A*S*H
Genre:  General
Length: Medium
Admin Note: rec'd on fancake

Author's Summary:
At home, before the war, his job had been to transform pain. Now he could only give it back.

Review:
This fic is very much in the "war is hell" vein that MASH took after the first couple of seasons.  After the episode where the 4077th takes a bus to the beach for a little R&R and they are nearly found by enemy troops, Hawkeye has realistic mental health issues and gets sent to Sidney Freedman who is in the middle of a moral crisis about his role in healing people so they can be sent back to the front.  They're difficult issues and the fic handles them well.  I particularly like the Sidney&Hawkeye friendship and Hawkeye's particular brand of humor when it comes through here.

Author:
Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Fandom:  Andromeda
Genre:  Meta, sort-of-AU
Length: Short
Warnings: possibly offensive religious themes?

Author's Summary:
None given.

Note: For those unfamiliar with the meta drama behind this fic, there's a lot of Andromeda fans who want little or nothing to do with the series about the middle of the second season.  That's when things behind the scenes for the show got kind of crazy and Robert Hewitt Wolfe (the guy who wrote this fic) left the writing team for this show.  That's also where this fic picks up.

Review:
Obligatory fic rec for Andromeda fandom.  It's not often you get fanfiction from the canon creative team.  It's not often you get good fic written in script format.  There's also the interesting and rather pointed way this fic straddles meta and AU.  This is, of course, related to all the drama noted above.  So that's a lot of reasons to read this, beside the fact that its a good story.  I have to admit I stopped watching Andromeda after season 2, not because I knew about the drama but because the series changed and I didn't find it as interesting anymore.  This fic is a cool kind of what-might-have-been.  What I really like about it though is the character voices (for obvious reasons) are spot on and really vivid just like the early episodes on canon.

But I also like to think about what Trance is saying (or maybe its just what I'm reading in to it).  She knows these 6 people are important, legendary heroes, and can/will do amazing, epic, universe-changing things.  But in that story, they get hurt, they die, and they aren't really happy.  So there's also this other, opposite possibility that's not really on the table because Trance has goals too, but in abstract, it's something along the lines of they're just 6 people who are happy and safe together doing something good but closer to normal than to world-changing-amazing.  Fiction often teaches us to aspire to be heroes and maybe that's right, but this fic (at least as I read it) isn't quite sure if that's a good thing or not.
