Title: What The Mayflies Leave Behind
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] MayFairy
Fandom: Doctor Who
Genre: Friendship, Character Study (Jack)
Length: Short (3,826 words)

Author's Summary:
The first time she meets the promised Captain Jack Harkness, he's so unaware of his own curse she can barely look at him. The second time, he knows all too well, but is not yet ready. The third time, he stretches out his hand and she takes it.

Review:
Ashildr meets Jack (no prior knowledge of the 12th Doctor series or characters needed, including Ashildr - you could substitute any older human-turned-immortal and the story would still work).  It's a character study for how Jack changes through the series. I really liked the contrast between the two immortals and the sense that their journeys to accepting their new natures has been different and even though Ashildr, whose POV the story is from, seems to think that her view is inevitable and Jack will/does get there eventually, I don't read Jack by the end in the same way as Ashildr reads though there is clear character development that sort of runs parallel - that balance makes for a really interesting dual character study.

The 456 made a mistake when they threatened Earth's children - there was another force out there, older and far more powerful, that wanted those children protected. Ianto Jones awakens in the fairy world, charged with one task: safeguarding the Chosen Ones. But returning from the dead is never easy.

Review:
One of the most creative fix-its for CoE and for getting Ianto immortality. I really like the fairies in this one - they're very otherwordly, even the one that speaks in historical human poetry. Ianto's character is really well written too, which is always nice to read.

Review:
Found this rec'd on fancake as the best truly-omnisexual!Jack fic and decided I had to read it.  It is that, and also a fantastic sci fi. I usually avoid food kink as a personal squick but I didn't pay attention to what I was getting into and then this appeared and I had to keep reading:

Excerpt:
"I'm not asking you to spawn," Jack said. "I'm asking if you'd like to have dinner with me." He leaned down and spoke low. "I want to watch you enjoy something else as much as you enjoyed that hull plating," he said, "and I want to know you're letting me." Just the thought was making his heart pound, and he was pretty sure Naraht could tell. Anyone watching should have been able to tell, should have seen in his face what a wonderfully, filthily carnal proposition he'd just made to this sweet young thing, and yet people were walking past as though their conversation couldn't be anything but professional. "That's what I want," Jack said. "But only if you want it, too."

I so rarely read straight PWP (I'm gray-ace so not really my thing) but that part actually really speaks to me (in some ways better than things written by other aces) and I almost never see that kind of thing represented so I had to come and share it here, and the story is so well written and wonderfully science fictiony, even the food part, that I didn't even mind the food kink.

Fandom: Torchwood, Doctor Who
Genre: AU, Time Travel, Future fic, Ianto lives (and Tosh too!)

Author's Summary:
And although Ianto goes hurtling through the universe, crossing time and space seems to teach him one thing in particular – that all roads lead to Rome.

Review:
There's a lot to love about this fic: Ianto travels with the 12th Doctor while Jack is away with the 11th in the Year That Never Was. Ianto gets stranded in the future - the 51st century, for added interest. Ianto studies at the Time Agency. Jack gets a real happily ever after. Tosh and Ianto both get to live. There's some lovely world-building for the 51st century and the Time Agency.

There are also some things that made me sad: the reason Jack had his memory wiped by the Time Agency. How this fic ended so suddenly after such care was taken to build it up.

But the good far outweighs the bad. It's the kind of fic I'll end up rereading from time to time.

Review:
It's so easy to do daemon fics wrong (as a "which daemon would these characters have" and nothing more), but if you bear with this story for a couple of paragraphs, it suddenly grows on you and really takes on its own life. It's still a character-driven fic, but it works as a short story rather than a drawn out meme. It's worth the read, especially for fans of daemon fic.

Author's Summary:
It began, or rather continued because nothing ever truly ends or begins, with a man who grew old but didn’t age. He was standing in a building that wasn’t ever built and looked out to a world that would never turn.

Review:
How did this fic sit on my ereader for so long and not get read?! This is an amazing fic with epic plot and some seriously clever twisting of notoriously-unlogical Whoniverse canon into shapes that actually make sense. I won't say this fic is without faults and a few teeny tiny plot holes of its own but it's so very good anyways.

So this fic is a Miracle Day AU that doesn't just reject canon reality and substitute fan's ship of choice - but wait, don't run away yet! I hated Miracle Day and this fic actually changed my mind about it a little bit - if this fic were Season 5, it would all be okay again.

Basically, Ianto and Amy and a Time Agent OC - who fits very nicely into the spectrum of dis-functionality of other Time Agents we know from canon - end up trapped in the Time Agency after it was destroyed and have to figure out why they're there, why they can't leave, why they all remember different timelines, and, once that's sorted, how they're going to stop reality from falling apart while also saving the human race from The Miracle. It really is an amazing fic. There's only one problem I have with this fic and that's that the villain's accomplice (who I can't name without spoiling) starts out alright but becomes very one dimensional in the end - this, as you will understand, might actually be considered a plus to some fans, but to me it could have been a little less heavy-handed at least. I actually loved the villain himself though - zero complaints there.

Light, interesting casefic where lost things keep turning up around the Hub, and then around Cardiff, and while that sounds really useful, when its things like a whole house that got bombed in the war, or wild extinct animals, well it quickly becomes apparent that it has to be stopped.

Review:
Amand_r has written a lot of good Torchwood fanfiction (and also good fics in several other fandoms) and this fic is no exception. It's from the point of view of a total outsider to all things Torchwood - an OMC who rents a room in his house to Ianto. The OMC has zero Gary Stu qualities - he's very well written with enough detail to be clearly and realistically his own person while also balancing the need of a Torchwood fic to contain enough story about Torchwood - basically, the whole fic works really well and is really very well crafted. It's no epic adventure and there's very minimal Jack/Ianto romance (so it's very different than pretty much everything else in the fandom), this fic is just simply one of the best Outsider POV stories I've found.

Review:
This fic is somber but touching and very well-written. It really is a series of glimpses, not an in depth story, but it really works that way. Also has good characterizations for Jack and Gwen and though there isn't much of Ianto's niece shown in canon, this Mica is very believable.  I found the end a teensy bit disappointing and I hesitate to explain because it's possibly spoiler-y, and anyways I think mostly a personal preference, so I'd say don't let that stop you from reading it but be aware going in that it's a mixed good and bad ending for various characters you may care about.

Torchwood is down a technical specialist and a doctor. The government wants Torchwood to hire replacements, but Jack isn't ready to replace Owen and Toshiko. Mycroft is a "minor govermment official".

Review:
Most John-and-Sherlock-work-for-Torchwood fics fail to impress me, but this one I liked. It's still a bit on the shallow side, but just a little bit. Whereas most of the others are just an excuse to put the John and Sherlock in the same room as Jack, this one has an actual case (Torchwood style) and Sherlock and John are actually competent and contributing without overwhelming the Torchwood characters and they manage to stay in character throughout, so all around a good fic.

Review:
Creative and evocative story. AU where Ianto is different (some of the differences are explained but there's also foreshadowing that never gets as far as the reveal) and repeatedly makes very different decisions but still very much the canon universe, just filled out a lot more with detail. Ianto is pretty awesome in this one and so are both Jack and John. Tosh and Owen are also very likable and clearly competent in their own rights. This fic hasn't been updated in awhile which makes me very sad because it's fantastic but even what is there so far really deserves a read.

Set after Something Borrowed, but not particularly "AU" - it slots into season 2.

A short but delightfully fluffy fic/series where child!Amelia travels with the Doctor who reunites with Jack and they raise Amelia together. I'm usually pretty attached to the asexual!Doctor idea but I can make this exception, especially since the focus is on fluff and not smut. There's a lot of talk about multiverses so sometimes the story strays to what happened elsewhere/elsewhen but it's handled pretty well.

The 456 are Junkies. Highly intelligent Junkies, with lots of blissed out time in which to think up more ways to get their fix. Why would they gas a building full of people who may yet live to create more children? The gas is more than anyone knows, and its reaction to one Ianto Jones is more than anyone, even the 456, could have thought.
Ianto has lived next door to the Rift since he was born, and has encountered so many different kinds of energy that it shouldn't be a surprise that an Alien drug would have an extreme effect on him, but it is anyway.

Review:
I put off reading this one for a long time because of the series title and how terribly slow it is to get started, but get through the intro and it's actually full of world-building, interesting details (including the appearance of Mainframe) and has Ianto being all kinds of awesome, basically resurrecting Torchwood in secret on his own using whatever resources he'd prepared in advance or collected knowledge of over his years at Torchwood.  Aide de memoire - this is the on where all the Thames House victims are brought back as children, Owen and Tosh and Steven mysteriously come back, and Ianto returns as a child and every time he dies, he returns randomly aged 8-26.  As creative and re-read-worthy as this fic is though, it's a little plodding at times and there isn't enough of it to really develop into a proper story - I really wish there was more, but it appears to be abandoned.

Okay, so I'm trying not to think too hard on why I apparently went from reading a bunch of cheesy romances to reading a bunch of death fics, but here, have another.  Death fic, that is.  This fic is about grief and about Rory's character too and what he does when Amy dies on an AU adventure not long after they start traveling together with the doctor.  The fic starts off a bit slow, the style influenced by the daze Rory finds himself in, but as Rory begins to find ways to live again, it picks up.   I'm really not one for shipping the Doctor, but I can bend my own rules for this fic - plus, the romance aspect is understated.

Though less than 1000 words, this fic has a lot to say about the characters of the Doctor and Jack. It's one of those fics where we see Jack so far in the future that it takes him a bit to put a name to the face that was once familiar.
