Title: The Fourth Deathly Hallow
Author: gingertart
Fandom: Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes ACD
Genre: Crossover, Action/Adventure, Mystery/Casefic
Length: Medium (~57k words)

Author's Summary:

From the private journal of John. H. Watson MD; not intended for publication. Being an account of the strange case of the Fourth Deathly Hallow; in which Dr John H. Watson and Mr Sherlock Holmes save a life, discover the true secret of Professor Moriarty, unravel a time loop or two, encounter a femme fatale, imbibe potions, break into and out of a wizarding mansion, hide in a male brothel, go shopping, track down a magical artefact, almost attend a ritual sacrifice, fail to be Obliviated and totally ignore the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy of 1692, all in the company of a lank-haired, irascible but secretly besotted schoolmaster, a bemused aristocrat and an increasingly perceptive and enamoured young hero.

Review:

A little slow to start but picks up pace to be pretty exciting once it gets going. Stars Harry, Draco, and Snape in the world of ACD's Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, except that there are wizards there too and they're having a troubles that might just make Harry long for his own war.

Review:
I found this fic when [personal profile] alessnox rec'd it on fancake summarized it very well: "This story is set after the last Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.. The premise is that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson had been in a committed relationship for over a decade, but of course no one mentions it out loud because of the buggery laws which would mean their imprisonment and hard labor. This makes it difficult when they are separated by World War One. Sherlock works in the intelligence office in London with his brother Mycroft, and John Watson is an Army doctor working in the trenches in France. The story is in the form of letters sent back and forth between the two during their separation."

I love this fic. It's really great as lgbt historical fiction. I don't think any knowledge of ACD canon is really necessary beyond knowing the basic facts about who Sherlock, Mycroft, Watson, and Lestrade are.

The summary might suggest PWP to some people, but it's actually a great casefic based on ACD canon.

Review:
This has the potential to be a fantastic story.  It's good enough it deserves a read and a rec.

Unfortunately, there are some fairly serious flaws.  For one, it hasn't been proofread.  For another, the treatment of the antagonists --- ranging from the temporary, minor ones at the start to the actual ones who don't appear until later --- is shallow in that the characters themselves are poorly developed and then their use in the story is also poorly crafted.  This stands out the most with the Matchmaker who seems to be portrayed as simply evil, as an unpleasant person going about political aspirations in despicable ways rather than, say, considering how an upper class woman in the Victorian era might legitimately perceive her role in matching pairs by class as defending valuable traditions.  Her early set up as Watson's main antagonist is also completely at odds with the rest of the story since she has nothing at all to do with the actual plot and just takes up emotional rising action that could have gone to that plot.  It would have helped a lot in preventing the actual problem from broadsiding the story later on.  While they are still only described to the level of half-developed background scenery, they suddenly come quite close to killing the main characters and that is not the way story structure is supposed to work (on a related note, Narrative Theory in the social sciences has some really fascinating ideas about why common story structure is so important... google if you're interested).  The problem with the writing here is not even the usual (for Holmes fandom) problem of the Holmes brothers' simply making leaps of logic that mere mortals like us readers can't follow, it's just the writing that can't seem to get the story on track soon enough.

Don't get me wrong - I think this is a really good story.  The concept and the plot, both character and case, are something out of a blockbuster and there are hints of world-building well done.  It's only because it is so great that the flaws I mention are so irritating - It could be so amazing and instead, it's merely good.  But even "good", this fic is still better than most fics so despite my criticism, I still strongly suggest it.

Two mysteries. Two of the greatest minds in the multiverse. One variable. Oh bugger... Sherlock Holmes - Discworld crossover FINISHED!

Review:
If what you like most about Discworld is the blatant glee with which Pratchett dissects well-known stories, poking at absurdities and prodding them into new shapes, you will love this story.  Pretty thorough knowledge of Discworld is required for full appreciation of this fic.  Knowledge of any of the many incarnations of Sherlock Holmes is probably fine since its the characters of Sherlock and Watson and Sherlock's methods that you need to know more than any canon situation.
