Fandom: Discworld
Genre: Watch-fic, Times-fic, (very good) OC character fic
Length: Medium (20,322 words and counting)

Author's Summary:
When clerk Sweetpea Hakim makes the impulsive decision to become the city watch's press liaison, she doesn't expect to wind up the avatar to a disgruntled god. Then again, this is Ankh-Morpork, where unfortunately anything is possible.

Review:
A new Must Read in Discworld fandom! The main character, a Klatchian clerk named Sweetpea Hakim who decides she really wants to become the Watch's public information officer, is fantastic!  Like all watch officers, she has to start on the beat, while also figuring out what exactly a Public Information Officer does and doing it.  Do NOT miss this!

Fandom: Discworld
Genre: LGBT

Length: Very Short (580 words)

Author's Summary:
The wedding of Cheery Littlebottom and Keen Slatequarry lasted precisely two and a half minutes, which made it by far the best wedding Sam Vimes had ever attended.

Review:
This fic had me grinning ear to ear! The complicated gender and sexuality of Discworld's dwarves have made for some great fics and this is definitely one to count among them.   I especially like the choice of Vimes as a viewpoint character - he's canonically a little baffled but supportive and accepting of his dwarf friends which is always fantastic to read.

“Good evening, gentlemen! Please pay attention. I am a reformed vampire, which is to say, I am a bundle of suppressed instincts held together with spit and coffee. It would be wrong to say that violence does not come easily to me. It’s not tearing your throats out that doesn’t come easily to me. Please don’t make it any harder.” -Terry Pratchett, Monstrous Regiment

Title: GNU Terry Pratchett
Fandom: Discworld
Genre: Code!, Terry Pratchett Tribute

Author's Summary:
In Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, the clacks are a series of semaphore towers loosely based on the concept of the telegraph. Invented by an artificer named Robert Dearheart, the towers could send messages "at the speed of light" using standardized codes. Three of these codes are of particular import:

G: send the message on
N: do not log the message
U: turn the message around at the end of the line and send it back again

When Dearheart's son John died due to an accident while working on a clacks tower, Dearheart inserted John's name into the overhead of the clacks with a "GNU" in front of it to as a way to memorialize his son forever (or for at least as long as the clacks are standing.)

Review:
Fan code! This is really cool and a lovely tribute. Installing this script automatically places the phrase "GNU Terry Pratchett" in the "overhead" of your blog posts (variants available for tons of different sites) like the GNU John Dearheart in the clacks in Going Postal.

Genre: humor
Pairing: Sam/Sybil
Length: Medium (11,169 words)

Author's Summary:
When Ankh-Morpork gets its first free library, and starts to feed a craving it never knew it had for trashy horror novels, weird happenings begin to threaten the cohesion of the city. Sam Vimes – and his lady wife – must solve the mystery and save the day.

Review:
Awesome plot and strong characterizations, it captures some of the canon tone and humor. The plot is fantastic and could totally stand as a canon novel. That plot was very, very rushed though - it should have been four times as long for the amount of awesome stuff crammed in here and I would have loved to read that much more of this lively fic.

Fandom: Discworld
Genre: Gen, Feminism is Hard
Length: Short (2,988 words)

Author's Summary:
From Angua’s office, with the door cracked, being a captain wasn’t all that different from being a sergeant.

Review:
I really liked this fic a lot. It's tagged “feminism is hard” and that really sums up the story's excellent look at identity and category and representation but don't assume it means this won't be a delightfully complex the story - because it is. It's short, but manages to be both a character and a world piece (in a fandom that does very interesting things with gender). It focuses on Angua and Sacharissa with a bit from Cheery and Carrot too, and the interactions between Angua and Sacharissa are so lovely, I wish they'd actually meet in canon like this. Also, there's some light humor, just in case you'd forgotten this was Discworld.

Author: A.A. Pessimal
Fandom: Discworld
Genre: Gen, Minor Characters
Length: Short (9,601 words)

Author's Summary:
An idea that span out of "Rincewind and the Redskins". To a psychic medium, attracting a Red Indian spirit guide is like getting David Beckham to play for your pub team. But sage, wise and kindly? You can get the wrong sort of Indian... stars Mrs Cake.

Review:
A.A. is reliably a very good writer and this fic is no exception. This story is well-written and entertaining to read, though it is more serious in tone than canon. Like Jingo, it deals with themes of race and prejudice and the habit residents of the Disc have of being completely flumoxed when their expectations on the power of belief fails to bring their most foolish beliefs and prejudices to reality.

Sergeant Jackrum liked being a grandfather. It turned out it was a lot more fun than being a grandmother.

Review:
Much like canon, this fic deals with gender and women's lib. as Jackrum's granddaughter comes looking for advice on how to change the world.  This fic may be short but it really put a smile on my face.    Knowledge of Monstrous Regiment is required, but no other Discworld books.

Review:
Great concept!  I love Angua's characterization and how she deals with Vimes throughout, I think the pack is very well-written, and spoilers --- a lot of what I like about this fic I can't properly explain without spoiling but seriously, if you like Vimes then this is a must-read.

Title: On Being Female

Fandom: Discworld
Genre: General, LGBT, Character Study
Length: Short (Words: 1,141)

Author's Summary:
It began, as did so many bewilderments small and large, with a declaration by Captain Carrot.

Review:
In this fic, Carrot tells Commander Vimes about joining the Dwarf Women's Guild which requires its members identify as female, so basically it's Carrot saying he identifies as female. Vimes finds this understandably confusing. Carrot, well, sometimes I think the best thing about Captain Carrot's character is how totally uncomplicated he finds things. It's a very interesting look at Carrot as a character and gender as the dwarves of Discworld see it (though fyi, the fic won't make sense if you're not already familiar with canon dwarfish ideas about gender).

Review:
A short story about the author of Where's My Cow and other tales visits Vimes at work in Ankh-Morpork to research her next novel.  Requires familiarity with Snuff, as well as the most basic, general knowledge of Pride and Prejudice.  Has some funny lines and of course the parody that the author's summary introduces.  I also like seeing the Gorden sisters from Snuff clearly doing well.

Belief is important. With enough belief, you can shape the world.

Review:
I knew there had to be a fic like this somewhere - Vetinari utilizes the nature of belief to manipulate reality to his own ends. I'm not totally convinced he'd necessarily seek this particular goal, but I can suspend disbelief and enjoy a good story. Vetinari really is very clever in this story, and so is Vimes which is great too.

Fandom: Discworld, Supernatural
Genre: Crossover
Length: Medium (Words: 35,323)

Author's Summary:
While hunting in a library, Dean slips into L-space and runs all the way to the Discworld. Getting home is going to take a little more effort.

Review:
If you happen to like both Supernatural and Discworld, you can't miss this fic! It starts in Season 5 of Supernatural with a very short glimpse into an original case that quickly turns into a problem for Dean as he tries to outrun a monster in a library and... I know you can see it coming... travels through L-Space to the Unseen University's Library. In addition to the obvious plot of how Dean will get back home, there's also a great deal of time and effort put into dealing with Dean's inevitable culture shock - after all, he comes from a universe where non-humans are Always Chaotic Evil and has landed in one where they're just another shape of "humanity". On his journey, Dean encounters the wizards, the Watch, and the witches and eventually, takes a bit of Discworld home with him that gives him and Sam the upperhand against the apocalypse at last.

or, how Ankh-Morpork acquired its first female Patrician very, very quietly.

Review:
It's not especially witty or funny and there's not a lot about this fic that makes specifically a good gender-swap fic so don't read it for any of these (or the ships - it's certainly no romance fic) but it is a good fic in several other important ways. For one, it is great at showing Vetinari (who is still very much in character) politicking her way into the patricianship with brilliance and cunning (and some help from certain other cunning ladies). Of the three pairings listed, I think only the first is actually obvious sans Shipping Googles, but the relationship or friendship (however you see it) with Sybil is very important to the story and very well done.

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Lunik
Fandom: Discworld

Author's Summary:
In the wake of the death of his Grace Sir Samuel Vimes, the various city watches across the disc are brought together in a way seldom observed among coppers.

Review:
So you know how, on the Disc, some things (like the laws of physics, the flow of time and causality, and the existence of gods) are a matter of belief? And you know how there are "Sammies" all over the Disc? Yeah. See Commander Vimes would probably be horrified of the idea but, the thing is, this fic makes so much sense it might just become your new headcanon.  The concept is great, but the execution, the details of it and especially of the kind of God of Watchmen that Sam Vimes would be, are just so perfect in this fic - it's fantastic.
