Length:  Short (Words: 8,673)

Author's Summary:
In which Jack Harkness dies, and River Song makes sure he always meets the Doctor on time.

Review:
From the author's notes, this was apparently supposed to be PWP that accidentally grew plot and really good characterization.  What this story is actually about is Timey Wimey relationships (of all sorts, not just ships) and it does that so, so well.  I love the parentheticals throughout - some of them are really poignant... especially when Jack remembers Gray on the game station.  In fact, I think it's those parentheticals all by themselves that made me love this story.  The voices of the different doctors are very good - actually, all the character voices are very well done. The narrative voice is very nice too, almost bordering on lyrical.

As with a lot of fics on the theme of Jack dealing with being the man who can't stay dead, there's a lot of angst (and this is coming from a fan of Supernatural - a show which I explain to people by starting out with "It's a show about manpain.") but I think what's great about the way its done in this fic is that River as Jack's foil really works.  River's got her own timey wimey relationship problems that are actually fairly well matched to Jack's so when they talk about the believable angst this causes, it doesn't come across as smothering the story and the character development in the way it can when Jack is given a foil whose own experiences mess with the perception and perspective on those problems (like The Doctor who has genocide, including of his own people, and other such enormous problems on his mind that can make Jack's seem petty sometimes or any of the canon humans who don't really have a frame of reference to understand the scope of Jack's problems beyond that they're in some way Blessed with Suck powers).

I don't usually like stories that ship The Doctor explicitly because my headcanon is still stuck on genetic looms and has The Doctor as pretty solidly asexual, but I like this fic anyways.  On the other hand, I appreciate that this fic doesn't go into seasons 3 and 4 of Torchwood, and that, at least, is completely in line with my personal headcanon.

So, yeah.  I like this one a lot.  It definitely gets a good score tag in my book.

Title: The (Mostly Accidental) Courtship of Dean Winchester

Dean/Castiel
Length: Short (Words: 11,101)

Summary:
Angelic marriage rites were never intended to go quite like this.

Review:
Apparently, angels really like bizarre, convoluted rules and rituals where a small fraction of a large number of possible seals have to be broken for something big to happen and they use them for everything from releasing Lucifer from his cage to getting married.  Too bad Dean and Castiel were on 180 out of 200 in the angelic marriage rites before Dean found out.  And they just can't seem to stop.  Fortunately, he soon warms to the idea.

I love this plot.  And it's not an established relationship fic, except that it sort of is in the "I've been watching canon with my ship glasses on again" way but that really works well here.  The characterizations are good too, but a little exaggerated, sometimes for humor and sometimes just because the change in medium allows for more of what a character is thinking.  I also like that while this fic does capture some of the irreverence and sarcasm and, of course, the angst of canon, it's also pretty funny.
