Title: Return To Go
Author: [profile] haley56
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: AU, Time Travel (Redo)
Pairings: Sam/Jess, Brady/Jess, future Dean/OMC?
Length: Epic (Words: 290,347+)

Author's Summary:
An oracle sends Dean back in time but knowing the future guarantees nothing especially when cursed by Lucifer. Some changes go right, some wrong and after meeting an ancient society of hunters some changes are frightening.

Review:
I'm a so torn about this fic. The person who rec'd it to me called it captivating and I have to agree. There are things about it that I like and that I think just might manage to balance out the things about it that are really badly done, so I'm going to rec it but with the following warnings.

Warning 1: There's an original super-secret, super-special society of higher being, immortal, werewolf guardians of humanity and one of their leaders befriends Dean and convinces him to accept his bisexuality... that sets off a few warning bells, right? It's not actually that bad - the author did a good job of keeping control over the character so he didn't become a Gary Stu (perhaps if the story wasn't abandoned before the possible romance got going then it would be different, but it works for now).

Warning 2: The spelling and grammar in this fic is absolutely horrendous. It is not possible to overstate how bad it is; I'm not even joking. This is an author who has clearly learned story-telling from television because there are a truly ridiculous number of confused homophones and other like-sounding words being mixed up. Even more words are spelled phonetically or straight up misspelled. There's also a catastrophic comma shortage. The author has been told hundreds of times to proofread (and sadly claims she has), so it just is what it is at this point. On the other hand, the formatting is correct and the dialogue is tagged properly, word choice aside from the homophone issue is great, and the character voices are good. I've learned to be comfortable reading English Language Learners' work and I just treated it the same way and, in that light, it didn't derail my enjoyment of the story but I suspect many people will find it challenging.

The good: I really like the plot and the characterizations in this one. There aren't a lot of redo fics in Supernatural fandom and among them, I think this plot stands out for its well-crafted complexity. I really like Dean's characterization here as well because he's damaged but aware and working on it and also very capable at the same time. Some people may consider the constant fighting (John vs Dean and Sam vs Dean) to be overbearing and crossing the line into John- and Sam-bashing, but I actually think it's one possible, reasonable characterization for these characters, especially given Sam's age group and John's history of bad decisions regarding his young sons.

Overall, I think the good things about this story mean it deserves a chance. If you can get past the spelling and comma issues then it's really a great story.
