I almost didn't read this fic because of the telepathy tag - I just didn't see how that could work in such a gritty hardcore cop drama - but it had an unusually high number of comments and bookmarks for its tiny fandom so I gave it a shot and now I'm rec'ing it to you because it totally deserves all those comments and bookmarks.
I love the characterizations in this fic - Dira Sudis gets the voices of the main characters spot on. In this small fandom, you can't really call yourself a fan if you haven't read this fic.
I think you can get by with this fic with limited knowledge of canon. This fic just injects some psychic powers into a canon that's pretty standard (if a bit darker than usual) for the police procedural genre. The only thing I think might not be well enough explained in the fic, though its alluded to, is the backstory with the main characters' fathers: Ben's father is a criminal defense attorney and a client broke into their home when Ben was little and attacked Ben and his mother while Ben's dad was elsewhere with his mistress and their daughter. John's dad is a psychologically abusive psychopath rapist and murderer serving time in prison. That's all you need to know, I think.
