Title: To The Limits of Your Choice
Author:
oreganotea
Fandom: Sherlock
Pairings: John/Mary, Sherlock & John
Genre: General
Length: Short (Words: 2,421)
Author's Summary:
In a world where everyone has a soulmate and there is no such thing as an imperfect soulmate match, Sherlock nevertheless refuses to have even that small part of his life decided for him. This is not the problem. The problem arises when John, who doesn’t exactly share Sherlock’s views on the matter, finds his own soulmate.
Review:
Sort of similar in concept to the movie TiMER, this is a story where everyone has some sort of mark that helps them identify their soulmate (trope: Red String of Fate). This fic is a standout among the growing number of stories that use the concept, mostly because it defies the trope in a very believable and relatable way. I like that this concept which is supposed to "take the uncertainty out of love" leaves both characters questioning so much and really having to decide whether to accept their "fate" or make their own decisions.
A better explanation of the concept as used in this fic, quoted from TVTropes: "Sherlock chooses not to care, or perhaps not to accept the consequences of acknowledging the person symbolized by the soulmate mark on his wrist. When John finds his soulmate, Sherlock asks John to choose between camaraderie with him and romance with her."
