With November fast approaching, I'm not going to have time to read as much fanfiction so I'll only be able to rec infrequently... but daily recs will be back Dec 1.

Until then, if you aren't familiar with Nanowrimo - National Novel Writing Month - it's a great program to motivate aspiring writers to actually write.  Check it out at nanowrimo.org.  Besides the writing challenge, there are some fantastic forums for writers to talk about fiction and help each other with research.  It's the kind of place where you can ask crazy but necessary (to a writer) questions like "How much sugar and butter do you need to sink a cargo sailing ship?" and get serious, well-thought out answers including details like the Lower Explosive Limit (g/m3) of sugar.  That was an actual one from last year.  Highlights so far this year include: "Tell me about your slippers" (to aid an android with cold, metal feet in the quest for the perfect warm and durable pair).  Also, chat with other writers about writing software, genres, character development, and how to write more and better fiction.
