Title: Wolf Whistle
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] ashinan
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Genre: BAMF!Stiles, Magical!Stiles
Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Length: Long (97,616 words)

Author's Summary:
It's one thing to attract the attention of the alpha pack moving in on Beacon Hills, but when Stiles' magic reveals he's not just the resident magic user in town, he realizes there might be more to the Little Red nickname he's adopted as his own.

Review:
This a great series in the Magical!Stiles genre - it's the one where Stiles writes runes on pieces of paper and sets them out in the forest on trees and in circles to make places he can hide and tricks and traps to catch the wolves. It's also a good pack fic with some nice feels and a bit of the chosen family vibe. There's quite a few pieces of fanart (including two gorgeous book covers) and a fanmix to go along with it floating around the internet somewhere so it clearly appeals to and inspires lots of people so definitely give this fic a try.

If the link gives you a 404 and you want to read this fic, message me with your email and I'll send you a copy of the epub I have on my ereader.  It's a great story by a great author; I hope the author hasn't left fandom.

Title: Cover for "Wolf Whistle"
Author: [deviantart.com profile] Lienwyn
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Genre: Cover art, digital painting

Author's Summary:
This is a cover I drew for the awesome fanfic series Wolf Whistle by the awesome and oh so lovely Ashinan
(a Teen Wolf fanfic, in case you want to know, and this here is Stiles Stilinski - the awesomest of them all)

I honestly wasn't supposed to do this - it was just a random sketch that slowly but surely grew into this - but I like it a lot now that it's done.
And yeah, it's slightly similar to that other cover I drew a while back but SHUSH! They're both pretty!

Review:
I love the use of color and transparency in this cover to create the right magical horror atmosphere. The composition is also strong. For the sake of remembering the fic it goes with, I wish she'd added some of the rune papers into the background, but that's a minor thing and the work as it is is very good and also well matched to the story it represents.

wolf whistle, fic rec, cover, teen wolf, sterek, i wanted to reread and having it on my ipad means i have to have covers for it, because if i've said it once i'll say it a THOUSAND TIMES
i can't deal with apple's default state for books without covers, so if you want covers too
here you go, (also maybe read this series bc omg y e s), the fanmix i made a while back was for stiles in this series, because he kicks some major ass

Review:
Another good cover for this excellent series. This one I think doesn't tell you quite as much about the story itself, but I still like it as a book cover because it grab attention and entice readership. I also really appreciate the layout and proportions of this cover - a lot of attention was clearly paid to that and the typesetting and it definitely paid off.

Title: Irregularities
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Amythe3lder
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Romance, threesome, friendship
Pairing: Mycroft/Lestrade/Molly, John/Sherlock
Length: Medium (54,205 words)

Author's Summary:
She held back from correcting them, because the truth was even more absurd and still as hopeless. It never was Sherlock.

Review:
I think most people would assume this fic is just another threesome romance, but I have to argue for this being one of the better friendship fics in the fandom and I think, screen time wise, the story is pretty evenly split in its focus so don't tune out if the ship tags aren't your thing. I really like Molly's characterization here - competent, caring, good at reading people but lacking other people skills, just a little eccentric but enough that it makes sense that she'd take the far more eccentric Holmes family in stride. I also really like Sherlock's characterization here and if you prefer to read Sherlock as lying about having sociopathy to cover up some other neurovariance, you'll like him in this one too and really like how Molly acts as his friend in this story.

Genre: pre-canon, Ettersberg, character piece

The Nightingale at Ettersberg.

Review:
A really evocative fic that really paints a picture of Nightingale at the battle of Ettersberg. This fic is spun really beautifully out of the bits and pieces known about the system of magic (when you have to concentrate on a shape in your mind to cast a spell and you know that at any moment you could overdo it and drop dead from magical brain damage, magical battle becomes much more harrowing) and about the battle (that nearly destroyed magical practice in Europe and has left a shadow hanging over Nightingale all his very long life).

Genre: art

Author's Summary:
Looking up Scottish mythological creatures and
Wulver: a werewolf in Shetland, that is said to have had the body of a man with a wolf’s head. It was reported to have left fish on the windowsills of poor families.
That is the nicest Werewolf legend I’ve ever heard of.

This quick sketch really put a smile on my face so I had to share.

This artist's whole gallery is filled with amazing digital paintings in several big fandoms, but this one is one of my favorites. I like the use of color and the way the piece depicts so much about Derek's character and emotional state.

Title: Supernatural By Gaslight
Author: [livejournal.com profile] x_strangeangels
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre: Historical AU, Historical Romance, Romance ("corset ripper")
Pairing: Dean/OFCs, Sam/OFC
Length: Long (~90k words)

Author's Summary:
In 1863, Mary Winchester — beloved Wife of John Winchester and adored Mother of Samuel and Deane — was cruelly lost within a fire that claimed the Winchester family's home.  Since that day, a bereaved John Winchester has traveled throughout Europe, tracking the foul creature that perpetrated such a cruel trick upon his family; raising his sons to follow in his footsteps.
Twenty-two years later, the Winchester brothers still hunt the beast.  Armed with Samuel's inventions and Deane's uncanny ability to bring down any prey, the Winchesters travel through Great Britain and Europe, following clues they receive in the form of mysterious letters — and Samuel's disturbing visions.

Review:
While normally I run away fast from any fic that described itself as an anything-ripper, I couldn't not try a historical AU that maintains the fantasy/horror aspect of Supernatural and I did enjoy it.  The romance heroine, Penelope, is a decent character and so is Vertiline, the other romance heroine (2 brothers = 2 romance heroines), later on and even though romance isn't my thing, that arc wasn't bad (I'm pretty sure that translates, through the cloud of my distaste for romance novels, to a ringing endorsement - just so you know).  I really liked the supernatural casefic arc though.  Its a little Hounds of the Baskervilles, a little Jules Verne, plenty of the canon-style horror, and it proved an interesting mix written in an exciting voice.  And besides that, there's just nothing else like this fic in the fandom so it also deserves a read on those grounds.

Fandom: Avengers/MCU
Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Psychiatric themes, Team feels
Length: Short (6,448 words)

Author's Summary:
He is useful. He holds onto that. He is useful and a useful tool will not be thrown away. (For illumynare's request: How about something with Bucky realizing the Avengers actually think of him as a person? And off I went to the utterly shameless h/c place.)

Review:
Written from Bucky's POV as he recovers from the depersonalization from his captivity.  Even so, its clear that Bucky feels for his teammates and they care about him back and it's lovely when he is finally able to realize that fit himself into that family as a person instead of an asset - lovely warm fuzzy feelings :)
