Title: His Own Man
Author: [fanfiction.net profile] crunchysunrises
Fandom: Harry Potter
Genre: Time Travel fix-it
Length: Long (147,481 words)

Author's Summary:
In the station between Life and Death Harry makes a different choice. Now he's eleven again, no one is turning out the same way, the Sorting Hat won't Sort him, the Malfoys are looking at him strangely, and - it's time for another visit.

Review:
A time travel redo fic where Harry very effectively takes control and gets things done.  He befriends Slytherins including the Malfoy family and a well-written OC kid Jeremiah Lestrange, takes his OWLs as a first year and studies other advanced magics, and is perpetually asking Snape questions about Lily even though Snape never answers them. Dumbledore doesn't like him much but thinks he can still pull the strings if he's subtle enough which makes for a dramatic dynamic that's much more interesting than most redo stories manage.

Fandom: Farscape
Genre: Epistolary
Pairing: John Crichton/Aeryn Sun
Length: Short (3,408 words)

Author's Summary:
The approaching 300th anniversary of the Eidolon Reemergence has triggered an upsurge of interest in the figure held by popular legend to be at the heart of the period's turmoil. Be it as folk hero or bogeyman, Crichton is more likely to be remembered by the ordinary person than Emperor Staleek, Mele-on Grayza, or even High Priestess Muoma. The persistent myth of Crichton makes it difficult for the serious scholar to uncover the truth behind this controversial and fascinating historical figure, but such efforts are not without results.

Review:
Written like a far-future historian's study of what is remembered of Crichton and the other main characters. It's interesting from a meta view and also for anyone interested in historical, anthropological, or literary theories (I hit the trifecta there, so naturally, I liked this fic a lot).

Title: Dark City
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] raedbard
Fandom: Discworld
Genre: humor
Pairing: Sam/Sybil
Length: Medium (11,169 words)

Author's Summary:
When Ankh-Morpork gets its first free library, and starts to feed a craving it never knew it had for trashy horror novels, weird happenings begin to threaten the cohesion of the city. Sam Vimes – and his lady wife – must solve the mystery and save the day.

Review:
Awesome plot and strong characterizations, it captures some of the canon tone and humor. The plot is fantastic and could totally stand as a canon novel. That plot was very, very rushed though - it should have been four times as long for the amount of awesome stuff crammed in here and I would have loved to read that much more of this lively fic.

Title: Westminster Care Home For Troubled Children
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] DemandMeNothing
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Genre: Character Study, Psych issues, Pre-canon
Pairing: Sebastian Moran/James Moriarty
Length: Epic (346,956 words)

Author's Summary:
Jim Moriarty is a troubled child. At only eight years old he's been moved from Dublin to a London care home for difficult youngsters, having attempted to kill his parents and baby sister in a house fire. His roommate is ten year old Sebastian Moran, a painfully shy but incredibly violent little boy.

Review:
I saw this fic rec'd as a must read non-Neurotypical character fic with the reccer saying it was spot on for Borderline Personality Disorder so I had to give it a try. I know next to nothing about BPD so I can't really comment on that aspect, but I do know that Moriarty makes a lot more sense as a character to me now having read this fic which is narrated from his POV so I wanted to pass on the rec. I have to admit I didn't make it very far proportionately into the 350k words, but I recommend at least giving it a try as a great character study of Moriarity.

Fandom: Rivers of London
Genre: Casfic, Psych issues
Pairing: Peter/Beverley
Length: Medium (13,777 words)

Author's Summary:
"Just now, when I was on my way over, Wen Hui called again to tell me that she had just got a second corpse from the same hospital. Apparently, a young woman in the same ward just dropped dead as well. And she had been exhibiting the same symptoms: Flashbacks, hallucinations but none of the other symptoms associated with PTSD or psychosis.” Dr Walid looked at Nightingale questioningly. “Ring any bells?”
Nightingale frowned. “I can't say it does, no. But we'd better check both bodies for vestigia tomorrow and have a look around the hospital.”
A Christmas casefic set post-Broken Homes

Review:
An interesting and well-written casefic with some character moments and some friendship feels between Thomas and Peter thrown in for good measure.

Title: How High The Moon
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] pleasanthell
Fandom: Glee
Genre: Historical AU, Romance
Pairing: Brittany/Santana
Length: Medium (39,013 words)

Author's Summary:
Santana owns and operates a gay-friendly speakeasy in New York city during the 1930s. Brittany finally gains the courage to drop by one night.

Review:
Warning: this fic is in 2nd person with "you" as Brittany. Also, her characterization is a bit off - though maybe that's because it's trying to be at least a bit "you" to every reader and can't get all the way there without losing some of Brittany's uniqueness. However, I did like this fic - Santana's character is great and the historical AU aspect is cool. Also, sweet, long femslash - not enough of that around.
